Job Summary and Requirements

This posting will be used to fill one (1) permanent full-time position working 75 hours bi-weekly. It will establish a 12-month eligibility list which may be used to fill similar positions. This is not a contract position.

This job is based in the thriving and diverse city of Whitehorse in the beautiful Yukon.

Who we are

The Yukon Children's Dental Program, comprised of Dental Therapists and Dental Hygienists provides comprehensive diagnostic, preventative and restorative dental services to preschool and school aged children in Whitehorse and throughout rural Yukon.

Are you passionate about providing comprehensive oral health care services and education to diverse communities? The Yukon Government is seeking a dedicated and skilled Dental Therapist to join our team in delivering high-quality dental care to preschoolers and school-age children across Yukon.

Providing oral health education and promoting preventive dental practices to patients and their families, our Dental Therapist collaborates with other dental and healthcare professionals to ensure integrated and holistic patient care. They conduct thorough dental assessments and maintain accurate patient records while maintaining confidentiality.

Essential qualifications
Please submit your resume clearly demonstrating how you meet the qualifications below. Selections for further consideration will be based solely on the information you provide in your resume.

  • Holds a Dental Therapist Certificate issued by a regulatory authority in Yukon, or another Canadian jurisdiction; and is in good standing with the regulatory authority that issued the certificate.
  • Current license or eligible to be licensed as a Dental Therapist with Yukon's Professional Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
  • Experience providing and delivering comprehensive dental treatment and preventative services to school aged children
  • Experience working to the full scope of a Dental Therapist's practice, including extractions, pulpotomies and crown placement
  • Experience working in public health and/or with First Nation's communities is considered an asset

New grads will be considered if they can demonstrate the essential qualifications through internships and practicums.

  • Understanding and adherence to the Dental Therapists' Code of Ethics & Code of Conduct
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated high standards and adherence to infection prevention and control protocols.
  • Strong ability and confidence to work autonomously and effectively plan and manage a large, diverse workload
  • Able to build and maintain effective relationships through collaboration with colleagues and clients
  • Excellent approach in working with children and families
  • Leadership skills that demonstrate aptitude in public health and program/service delivery

Conditions of employment

You must meet the following conditions before being hired, or within the time frame noted.

  • Registration with Yukon's Professional Licensing and Regulatory Affairs for dental therapist license
  • Valid class 5 driver's licence or equivalent
  • Security clearance with vulnerable sector
  • TB Screening
  • WHMIS 2015, to be obtained within 1 month of hire
  • CPR certificate, to be obtained within 6 months of hire
  • Transportation of dangerous goods certificate, to be obtained within 6 months

Job requirements

This job requires you to perform, and/or be exposed to, the following:

  • Must be able to utilize personal vehicle within Whitehorse city limits;
  • Extensive travel, up to 50% of the time, throughout the rest of the Yukon will be required (up to 1-3 weeks per trip); a government issued fleet vehicle will be provided by Yukon Government
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs;
  • Must be comfortable working with young children (preschool and school-age) and must be comfortable working alone
  • Candidate is responsible for locating and securing their own housing; this is not provided by Yukon Government.
