Unity Health Toronto Laboratories provide an essential service for patient care, research and teaching activities for UHT patient care programs. The Departments provides timely, accurate, safe and efficient services to patients and health care providers, offering full service Hospital base testing with state of the art equipment.

The Laboratory Medicine department performs over eight (8) million tests per year that is critical to all aspects of medical care throughout the Hospital. The laboratory is committed to the academic promotion of Laboratory Medicine disciplines within UHT to the extent that the Hospital becomes a magnet site for world class Laboratory Medicine Physicians, Researchers, Students and revenue generating activity.

Supporting the Manager, Quality and Risk, the primary responsibilities of the Quality and Safety Lead are:

  • Assist with establishing, documenting, implementing, maintaining and communicating a Quality Management System (QMS) to ensure that medical laboratory services meet regulatory/ professional requirements, the needs of patients and all personnel responsible for patient care, and to support continuous improvement
  • Assist in the implementation of current applicable Accreditation Canada, Accreditation Canada Diagnostics Accreditation and ISO 15189PlusTM, Canadian Biosafety Standards and Guidelines, and Health Canada Standards as required within Department of Laboratory Medicine;
  • Serves as a key resource for the interpretation of the intent of regulatory/professional requirements and good laboratory science practices
  • Support Quality Initiatives and Strategic goals and objectives tied to Hospital Quality and Strategic Plan
  • Help establishing Quality Indicators to evaluate QMS and leading quality meetings to review QMS performance
  • Assist in the facilitation of external and internal audits and liaising with external accreditation bodies and MOHLTC
  • Create, implement and monitor Biosafety Program including Policies and procedures aligned with Canadian Biosafety Standards and Guidelines and ensures the procedures are compliant with CBSG
  • Create, implement and monitor Safety Program including Policies and procedures

·Oversees Local and Divisional Risk Assessment to mitigate any safety risks.

·Organizing and facilitating of quality meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology with at least 3 years¿ experience in a CL2 Clinical Laboratory
  • Registration and in good standing with CMLTO as an MLT
  • Designated as a Registered Biosafety Officer within Canada through the Canadian Association for Biological Safety an asset
  • Experience in developing, writing, editing, and evaluating operational protocols, policies, safety procedures, and validation/verification reports
  • Experience with performing audits against accreditation standards (i.e. ACDx)
  • Experience in incident investigation and risk mitigation.
  • Experience in the interpretation of safety regulations and safety related policies
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills appropriate to frequent contact with all levels of administration, faculty, staff, students, and visitors including the presentation of information where detailed explanation is required to obtain consensus and cooperation.
  • Self-motivated, with strong organizational and computer skills
