Post Doctoral Fellow Prehospital Trauma and Resuscitation (Job ID: 4251)

The FIRST60: Prehospital, Trauma and Resuscitation Sciences Program is an interprofessional team of clinicians, researchers and trainees seeking to understand and improve care from time of injury to acute resuscitation. The first 60 minutes are critical for resuscitation of the sickest patients, whether from an injury or cardiac arrest.

Trauma is the leading cause of death for young Canadians. St. Michael¿s Hospital is a lead trauma hospital, providing specialized care for severely injured patients, whether arriving by land or air. Dr. Brodie Nolan leads a dynamic and growing resuscitation sciences program focusing on improving prehospital trauma care and evaluating acute trauma resuscitation, with a focus on hemorrhage and transfusion.

The FIRST60 program is currently looking for a Post Doctoral Fellow to work alongside Dr. Nolan and team to develop a specialized area of research and expertise in prehospital, transfusion, and acute trauma resuscitation.

This position encompasses developing research ideas and designing research studies under the direction of Dr. Nolan and team, leading and managing some parts of or entire studies, along with writing proposals, manuscripts and presentations for knowledge dissemination.


Activities, Duties & Responsibilities:

Research Study Development and Initiation

  • Leads/manages some parts of or an entire study under the direction of a Supervising Scientist
  • Conducts ongoing review of relevant literature to keep up with current knowledge
  • Participates in and leads team/lab meetings and research rounds by providing insightful and intellectual discussions and presentations.
  • Developsprotocolsandbudget;initiatesandleadssmalltomoderatelevelstudiesunderthedirectionofa Supervising Scientists
  • Writes proposal and application for awards in conjunction with the Principal Investigator to increase funding, enhance CV and the profile of the institution, e.g., CIHR Postdoctoral Fellowship and scholarships.
  • Developsnovelresearchideasanddesignsscientificstudiesofmoderatescopetoaddressknowledgegapor complex problems
  • Utilizesresearchknowledgetocontributetoinstitutionalactivities,e.g.,beingajudgeforpostercompetitions, etc

Report/Manuscript Writing and Presentations

  • Writes reports and manuscripts for publication as first author, under the guidance / mentorship of the Scientists/Investigative team while maintaining responsibility for academic out put of research studies
  • NetworksandcollaborateswithotherResearcherstokeepabreastofnewdevelopmentsinresearch and exchange information
  • Selects appropriate techniques/methods to analyze data and provides interpretation of study results

Day to Day Project and Staff Guidance

  • May provide day to day guidance to research staff and students
  • Guides and mentors students on how to conduct research/analysis and how to write and review their work
  • Seeks, develops, and maintains, internal and external relationships for research collaborations and partnership

Qualifications:

  • Within the past 1-2 years, completed a recognized Doctoral (PhD or MD) degree
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience in prehospital projects and/or evaluation of acute resuscitation (trauma and cardiac arrest) is preferred
  • Detail oriented with very good analytical skills related to proposal development/project management is required
  • Experience in several aspects of research study development, initiation, execution, analysis and interpretation is required
  • Experience with the preparation of manuscripts and data presentation required
  • Excellent communication (verbal/written) and interpersonal skills is required
  • Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple projects in a timely manner and flexibility to adapt to changing workload
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Capable of independent interpretation of study related data
  • Professionalism and self-motivation
