The Toronto Grace Health Centre (TGHC) provides medically complex, and specialized care and services to those individuals who require Complex Continuing Care (CCC), Post Acute Care Rehabilitation (PACR), and Palliative Care. The care and services provided at TGHC help facilitate the patient flow through the health care system and ensures recovery to those individuals who may return to their homes or to other facilities in their communities.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY & PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSISTANT WITH A FOCUS ON MENTAL HEALTH – FULL TIME

Position Summary:

The Patient Care Department at our Harbour Lights, Scarborough location is currently seeking an Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Assistant (OTA/PTA). The OTA/PTA is part of the interdisciplinary team and follows the overall plan of care to patients throughout the hospital that would benefit from mental health support by demonstrating the clinical knowledge required to carry out assigned duties with patients from our programs. We are looking for a highly motivated individual to work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Provides patient care under the supervision of the assigning Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist in accordance with the support personnel guidelines of the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario and the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario.

Communicates with the Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, and the team on patient/family concerns, needs, wishes, and goals.

Carries out psycho-educational treatments to manage behavioral symptoms as assigned by the Occupational and Physiotherapist.

Carries out individual and/or group treatments as assigned by the Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist.

Transport and maintain equipment on a regular basis.

Performs other tasks as directed by Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist.

Monitors and reports any change in health status, performance or progress, or adverse reaction to the prescribed program and keeps the Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist fully informed of patient status.

Regularly inspects and monitors designated treatment spaces for safety and adequate supplies.

Participates in cross unit/program coverage with other OTA/PTAs.

Participates in orientation of new staff and rehab volunteers as required.

Participates in continuous education opportunities to maintain a current and accurate knowledge base and applies best practices to the clinical environment.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

College Diploma/Certificate for Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Assistant or equivalent from an accredited school.

Current Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Saving course.

Excellent written and verbal communication as per the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario and College of Physiotherapists of Ontario, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with the members of the interprofessional team, along with a high level of initiative and adaptability to rapidly changing demands.

Previous experience in hospital setting, neurological population experience an asset.

Proficient computer skills and experience with MS Office.

Must have the physical strength, flexibility, and endurance to perform the role as determined by the physical needs of the position based on assessment conducted by Occupational Health Services.

Excellent attendance record.

The successful candidate must provide an acceptable Police Records Check (Vulnerable Sector Screening).
