The successful candidate will be required to work during the period of June to September, 2024.

The Spiral Garden is an integrated art/garden/play program for children and youth with physical disabilities and developmental delays. Participants will interact and play through music, visual art, movement, drama, gardening and other arts activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate/lead a team of client support staff who provide assistance to children/youth with special needs within an integrated outdoor art/garden and play program. This could include personal care (toileting, feeding etc.), adaptations, communication, mobility and/or behaviour management.
  • Develop care and behaviour plans for individual participants as required in collaboration with staff, families and participants
  • Liaise with families prior to and throughout the duration of the program to ensure the needs of the children/youth are met.
  • Support participant screenings to identify needs
  • Assign client support staff to participants according to their needs and staff skills.
  • Work effectively in a team environment to provide a safe stimulating experience for all participants.
  • Collaborate with program staff and volunteers
  • Together with the Site Coordinator, create daily schedules for children/youth and support staff to ensure that the needs of the participants are met throughout the day
  • Lead meetings with support workers to debrief, plan and resolve any challenges that may arise.
  • Participate in staff meetings and bring any feedback from the care team meeting to the larger staff meeting.

Qualifications

  • College/University student or graduate in allied health services (i.e. Developmental Service Worker, Child Development, Nursing, Occupational Therapy)
  • Able to lead, support and advise a team of client service assistants
  • Experience working with children and youth with diverse special needs including physical disabilities, neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g. autism) and/or global developmental delays
  • Coordinate debriefing and planning meetings
  • Sensitivity to the needs of program participants and their families
  • Excellent organizational and documentation skills
  • Excellent communication and time management skills.
  • Ability to work as a member of a larger team.
  • Adaptability, flexibility, problem solving and independent decision-making skills required.
  • Experience with summer camps and/or the field of community arts programming an asset
  • Basic CPR certification - Basic Rescuer (C) certificate preferred
  • CPI/Crisis Prevention Intervention training preferred
