Role

Reporting to the Manager, Harm Reduction, the RN works as part of an interdisciplinary team to provide health care and treatment to clients who consume drugs within the CTS. Many clients may have soft tissue damage and injuries, chronic illnesses as well as complex health and social needs. Care may be carried out independently according to scope of practice, under the guidance of medical directives, or in consultation with relevant providers as identified in SWCHC policies and procedures. The RN also ensures the efficient operations of the CTS by maintaining equipment, supplies, adhering to universal precautions and infection prevention and control requirements.

Requirements

• Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing
• Current registration College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
• Professional Liability Protection (PLP)
• Minimum 3-5 years nursing experience in mental health & addictions with preference given to candidates with harm reduction experience.
• Passion for working with high-risk populations and active drug users.
• Commitment to working from a health equity and anti-oppressive lens.
• Lived experience of drug use and/or experience in advocacy for persons who use drugs considered assets.
• Experience providing nursing care to persons who use drugs, in particular intravenous drug use, an asset.
• Experience in an outreach, drop-in or shelter setting is an asset.
• Experience in emergency response is an asset.
• Additional shifts available, shifts are 4, 8 or 12 hours based on the needs of the service.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of nursing best practices for individuals with substance use, supervised injection/consumption services, and suicide assessment. Familiarity with Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) Best Practice Guidelines an asset.
• Knowledge of substances frequently used in the CTS service user population, psychoactive properties & possible drug interactions.
• Knowledge and ability to screen and assess for risk of overdose & withdrawal.
• Knowledge of primary care and the social determinants of health
• Knowledge of health promotion, disease prevention, behaviour change and health teaching.
• Strong clinical assessment skills
• Demonstrated ability and clinical expertise working with clients in crisis.
• Expertise in non-violent crisis intervention and de-escalation
• Knowledge of concurrent mental health distress presentations including psychosis, trauma, and emotional dysregulation
• Knowledge of harm reduction approach and service delivery
• Effective organizational, critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making skills.
• Ability to delegate
• Ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team.
• Ability to work with people with concurrent disorders.
• Ability to work under stress with multiple demands.
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Excellent communication skills
• Knowledge of legislation, acts and regulations that govern nursing practice.
• Valid CPR and First Aid
• Successful completion of police record check for vulnerable populations

Language Capability

• English
• French considered an asset.
• Proficiency in other languages considered and asset.
