The Salvation Army London Village has been an integral part of the London community since 1954 providing excellence in care to families in need. The London Village offers a variety of programs to meet the diverse needs of families including a Child Care Centre, Respite Program for individuals with intellectual disabilities and Adult Day Program for seniors. Our program site sits on 9 ½ acres of beautiful green space and offers a gymnasium, pool, pavilion and playground equipment for everyone to enjoy. The Respite Program supports adults and children with intellectual disabilities and their families offering different program options to meet individual need. The day program is for adults interested in building skill and social connection and enjoying recreation/leisure opportunities.

The Respite Day Program is currently hiring Support Staff. This position is best suited for someone that can fulfill our pledge to encourage participant independence, advocate for community inclusion, foster friendships and provide positive role models.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Client Services:

  • Responsible to ensure the needs of program participants are met i.e. physically, emotionally, medically, and behaviorally.
  • Contribute to the planning and facilitation of recreation & leisure activities, volunteer opportunities and skill building opportunities appropriate to age, skill level, interests and goals.
  • Advocate on behalf of the program participants to promote health and well-being.
  • Provide personal care to participants as required.
  • Provide intervention for any behavioural challenges.
  • Liaise with parents, caregivers, volunteers, and community supports/partners as required.
  • Responsible for the transportation of participants in program vehicles.
  • Prepare and distribute meals, snacks/nourishments as outlined on the approved menu.
  • Complete house maintenance duties as well as the general organization and maintenance of property and program supplies.
  • Responsible for dispensing medication and ensuring that all medication charting is completed in compliance with established agency policies, as required.
  • Required to complete safety checks, logbook recordings, as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a permanent part-time position working 16 hours per week; currently scheduled Monday's and Tuesday's day shift 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but flexibility to meet program needs is required.
  • Some travel is associated with this position.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequent lifting, twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, pushing and pulling.
  • Walking and standing for long periods.
  • Some kneeling, running may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completed two (2) years of Community College in related education (Developmental Service Worker diploma, Child and Youth Worker diploma or equivalent) in the area of developmental disabilities.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of prior work experience in a social service setting providing direct care to children, youth and adults who have intellectual disabilities, dealing with crises.
  • Current First Aid & CPR Certification.
  • Current Safe Food Handling Certification preferred.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office products is required - i.e. Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Email and Internet etc.
  • Fluent French verbal and written communication skills are an asset.
  • May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
