Description

Cuthbert House is an Open custody/ Open Detention residential facility for male youth between the ages of 12-17, who are involved in the criminal justice system. Educational Outreach Program Coordinator's primary job is to provide supervision and maintain the safety and security of the youth while at school, under the supervision of the School Liaison.

Reporting to the Assistant Director, the Educational Outreach Program Coordinator helps ensure efficient safe and secure operation of the school program that Cuthbert House as an open custody / open detention facility has through a high level of resident supervision and staff support. All responsibilities listed below are done at the direction of the Assistant Director or by management.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

School Program Supervision - Safety and Security

  • Assist School liaison with supervision of residents in the school program
  • Assist with the completion of school related duties, reports and logs
  • Communicate and enforce facility rules while maintaining safety
  • Follow policies and procedures of Cuthbert House, The Salvation Army and the Ministry of Children & Youth Services
  • Observe, assess and document resident behavior while in the classroom and note ongoing progress in a factual manner to management to assist with case notes
  • Assist with escort residents in a lawful, safe and expedient manner as required
  • Challenge and address criminal conduct and thinking with clients

Client Program & Services

  • Assist with comprehensive case management for clients as it relates to education
  • Assist with the delivery of group programming when required
  • Deliver group programming when required
  • Assist in providing guidance and advise to clients
  • With direction, assist clients to address their criminogenic issues
  • With supervision help clients with interpersonal relationships
  • With direction and as part of the program, appear in court when necessary
  • With assistance from supervisor, participate in referring clients to outside resources related to educational needs fulfillment

Sundry Duties - As required

  • Assist support clients in fulfilling their spiritual needs
  • Complete Sundry duties for required housekeeping and maintenance duties in the facility

Perform other duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a temporary full time position based on 35 hours per week until July 13, 2024
  • Working environment includes:
    • A residence with two levels and a basement, all accessible by stairs. Including an office setting with generally agreeable conditions
    • Turner Fenton Secondary School classroom. Accessible by stairs and elevator.
  • May encounter hostile clients

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:
    • Is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of the employment.
    • Is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*: and,
    • Is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
    • *International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are a Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident.
  • Working towards a degree or diploma in Social Sciences, Child and Youth Care, Correction or Social Services and related experiences
  • Valid CPR and First Aid certificate

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of Youth Justice is considered an asset

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Participate in our online Praesidium Abuse Training and Health & Safety training required upon hiring
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
