Community Service Support Worker providing services to the NWT resource center

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Answering the telephone and referring calls to the appropriate departments
  • Delivering messages as required
  • Receiving deliveries and donations, sorting, light lifting (20 pounds) and storing food donations
  • Receiving general public walk-ins and referring them to the appropriate department
  • Ensuring the cleanliness and tidiness of the reception areas.

Community Services Support

  • Distributing food hampers and clothing vouchers & the required paperwork/data entry
  • Arrange for appropriate discarding of non- monetary donations that are unusable.
  • Receive, sort and organize non-monetary donations or purchased products following direction from caseworker or supervisor.
  • Responsible for stocking and distributing of toiletries to clients
  • Responsible for letting clients in to utilise the laundry and shower facilities.
  • Maintain safety of the clients and the facility
  • Light lifting and moving of boxes.
  • Work cooperatively with volunteers
  • Provide crisis intervention as required
  • Assist with seasonal programs including but not limited to Christmas, Kettles and Food drives
  • Prepare food hampers for clients
  • Maintain food bank cleanliness, tidiness, and organization.
  • Refer clients to other community resources where appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned by Community Services Supervisor or designate

Administrative support:

  • Recording of statistics for Community Services Department and Corps
  • Filing for Community Services Department
  • Receipt, recording and disbursement of mail.
  • Accept walk-in monetary donations and provide temporary receipts to donors
  • Support leadership staff with correspondence, filing and scanning.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or Corps Officer

Contact

There is constant contact with the public. The incumbent is the public's first contact with The Salvation Army NWT Resource Centre. As well, there is steady interaction with the rest of the staff.

Working Conditions:

  • The work environment entails frequent association with individuals who are under the influence of alcohol or other drugs as well as other mental health issues, and the associated behaviours of such states.
  • There can be stress due to potential chaotic encounters.
  • The incumbent will have to address uncooperative individuals.
  • There will be general housekeeping tasks required in order to maintain workspace.
  • Lifting/moving of up to 40 pounds is required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Social Service Experience
  • Possess strong computer skills
  • Ability to learn Salvation Army specific software including Link2Feed
  • Have current First Aid/CPR certification
  • Clear Criminal Record Check required
  • Completion of high school plus additional courses in facilities management or equivalent.

PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

Previous experience in reception or general administrative work experience

Hours of Work: on call .
