The Opportunity:

As the Summer Recreation Leader, you will work collaboratively with other staff and volunteers to develop and deliver programming designed to cater to individuals of all ages' physical, mental, and social health, including children, youth, and older adults in Eastern Charlotte County. You will engage and supervise those participating in YMCA recreation programs and activities. You will ensure an enjoyable, safe and inclusive environment for participants of various ages, skills and abilities. This position requires flexibility to work day, evening, and weekend shifts.


Responsibilities:

  • Effectively plan and organize recreation programs and activities with other staff and volunteers.
  • Lead scheduled recreation programs and activities for all ages.
  • Employ inclusive and adaptive programming principles to cater to all participants and resource additional support as deemed necessary.
  • Set up and supervise drop-in and scheduled programs.
  • Scheduling and administrative duties, including monitoring sign-in/sign-out and number of participants present.
  • Maintain a safe and organized area during and outside core programming hours.
  • Maintain program and facility equipment during activity set up and tear down clean and orderly.
  • Communicate and enforce guidelines to ensure a safe and controlled environment while focusing on accident/incident prevention.
  • Has a complete understanding and follows all Child Protection Policies and Practices.
  • Act as a leader, teammate and mentor to participants.
  • Assume additional duties, including training and meetings as required.
  • Encourage and engage participants to develop volunteer opportunities within the programs.
  • Act as a positive role model, effectively guiding youth behaviour and actions.


Skills and Qualifications:

  • Meets the eligibility criteria for Canada Summer Jobs, including being between the ages of 15 - 30.
  • High School or Post-Secondary Education.
  • Experience working with children, youth, or older adults is an asset.
  • Possess a strong work ethic and excellent organizational skills.
  • An excellent team player can share cooperative leadership with other staff and volunteers.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Employment is contingent on having a clean Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
