PEER FAMILY MENTOR

Full-time, Permanent Position


Classification: HSI, $23.88 - $28.27 per hour

Hours of Work: 7.25 hours per day or 36.25 hours per week (FTE 1.0)

The Community Addiction Response Team (CART) is an inclusive child protective project for families referred to Michif Child and Family Services with co-occurring parental substance abuse and mental health issues. The Peer Family Mentor will work closely with CART Case Managers in all areas of service to families referred to the CART Program. Peer Family Mentors will engage with parents to enhance parenting capacity, provide hope and motivation for recovery, ensure access to and retention in treatment, and enhance sobriety and participation in ongoing recovery supports.




Key Responsibilities and Activities:


Direct support to adults/parents and indirectly to children


- Assist with skills for sober living such as healthy relationships, budgeting, education, time management and navigating the public systems of child welfare and the courts


- Support sober parenting skills such as meeting the child's basic needs and fostering child well-being


- Connect the clients with community services and resources


- Work in partnership with the CART team and family regarding plans and goals for treatment and recovery supports


- Participate in family network meetings, CART team meetings, court hearings and case consultations


- Participate in home visits; connect with the family regularly by phone or in person


- Seek out and support families in accessing community resources (e.g. Resource centre's, parenting groups, housing, food banks, etc.)


- Provide in home support


Provide administrative support for managing caseload


- Responsible for documenting and sharing relevant information


- Other duties as assigned




Key Qualifications


Education


- High School or GED, (Youth in Care or Applied Counselling Certificates, Early Childhood diplomas, or related post-secondary education considered an asset


Experience


- Two years relevant work experience (experience working with children and families considered an asset)


- At least 3 years of sustained and successful recovery from substance abuse disorders


-Previous personal or familial involvement with child and family services


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


- Demonstrated understanding of Metis, Inuit and Aboriginal culture


- Awareness of issues related to child abuse and neglect


- Demonstrated understanding of the impact of substance use for the user and their family


- Excellent communication skills including listening and observation skills


- Ability to work collaboratively within a team and with other community and related service organizations to achieve Agency goal and objectives


- Knowledge of child development, attachment, parenting skills and community resources


- Ability to engage in a meaningful way with families


- Ability to maintain highly sensitive and confidential information


- Access to a vehicle and possession of a valid Manitoba drivers license and acceptable driver's abstract is required as travel within communities will be required


- An acceptable Child Abuse Registry Check, Prior Contact Check and Criminal Record Check
