Job Summary

UBC Student Health Services (SHS) offers students a wide range of health services provided by family physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses and specialists. The Physician Lead is responsible for the medical direction of SHS at the Vancouver Campus clinics. The Physician Lead role is primarily responsible for direct patient care, involving at least 60% of their time. All other administrative tasks related to this role involve approximately 40% of their time.


The Physician Lead enacts a commitment to anti-racism, equity, diversity, inclusion and decolonized practice throughout continuous improvement and innovative clinical and medical practices across the clinics and medical care of patients.

The Physician Lead works in the Student Health Clinics at either Koerner Pavilion and/or Orchard Commons in the University of British Columbia. The clinics are open during the regular work week with extended hours on some evenings and weekends depending on the academic term.

The Physician Lead participates in a call schedule when the clinic is closed for urgent and emergent patient care needs.


Organizational Status
Reporting to the Director, Student Health Service, the Physician Lead is responsible for the direction of medical services as stated in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia Practice Standard for Primary Care Provision. The Physician Lead works closely with students, faculty, and staff to provide medical advice and direction for SHS. SHS is under the Vice President, Students (VPS) portfolio and may need to liaise with other members of staff and leaders in VPS, including the Associate Vice President, Student Health.

Work Performed

Medical Director Responsibilities

  • Fulfill the role of medical director per the CPSBC Practice Standard entitled Primary Care Provision in Walk-in, Urgent Care and Multi-registrant Clinics. Ensure compliance with the Bylaws and professional standards of CPSBC are maintained. Establish administrative procedures to ensure standards of appropriate medical care as listed by the Practice Standard above are in place including but not limited to timely care provision and diagnostic results notification as well as after-hours care access. Represent the UBC SHS in communication with CPSBC.

  • Identify an alternate, registered with the College, to assume the above role when the lead physician is unavailable, and ensure they are oriented to the role.

  • Ensures all medical staff and activities in SHS are in compliances with standards and guidelines for the College of Physicians and Surgeons for physicians (CPSBC) and the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM) for nurse practitioners. May communicate or liaise with the CPSBC and BCCNM as required.

  • Monitors and maintains all medical and clinical procedures and professional standards of practice/codes relating to providers at SHS and the policies/procedures/standards are met and followed by providers appropriately.

Clinical Practice

  • Responsible for a full range of primary care issues including mental, physical and social health.

  • Actively provides care through prescheduled and same day appointments.

  • Ensures clinical services are provided in ways that are sensitive and responsive to the broad range of diversity within the student population including, but not limited to gender, race, culture, ability, and sexual orientation.

Operational Activities

  • Partners with the Associate Director, Collaborative Practice on clinical services planning and integration initiatives for the SHS and SHW.

  • Responsible for the quality of medical services provided in the clinics through chart reviews, supervision of peer reviews, through institution of questionnaires or surveys answered by staff and students, and through staff meetings which address such issues as in-service education, service improvement, and improved staff relations.

  • Identifies opportunities for professional development for clinical staff, including supervising research and teaching learners within the department. Coordinators learners and learning opportunities for clinical students.

  • Partners with Early Alert program and ensures cases are followed up on as appropriate.

  • Participates in leadership and strategic direction discussions, where relevant clinical involvement is required.

  • Participates in University committees in relation to health and wellness, where relevant clinical involvement is required.

  • Acts as the Privacy Officer for SHS to address privacy issues and oversees privacy breaches within the department in a timely and effective manner.

  • Consulting regarding the clinic's BC Physician Master Agreement and UBC Student Health Service Vancouver Coastal Health Contract.

  • In partnership with the Associate Director, Collaborative Practice, ensure clinical policies, procedures and protocols are developed, communicated, and revised on a regular basis to ensure area best practices.

Staff Management

  • Manages all medical staff in the SHS including physicians, and nurse practitioners. Defines work assignments, duties and responsibilities of these positions within appropriate collective agreements.

  • Responsible for recruitment of clinical staff in partnership with the Director, SHS and other leaders of the SHW portfolio. Identifies staffing needs to ensure appropriate, effective clinical care for students.

  • Arranges performance evaluations for medical staff. Addresses performance issues with SHS clinical staff, and supports the Director and others when a performance issue occurs. Manages disciplinary matters between staff and provides leadership and guidance when conflicts occur.


Consequence of Error/Judgement

The Physician Lead takes on all the responsibilities of a fully licensed physician.

Must exercise judgement based upon a thorough knowledge of medical procedures, guidelines and regulations. Errors in judgement may cause serious results and/or harm to students or staff, reduce service, cause embarrassment and loss of credibility for the involved staff or provider, the Physician Lead, and SHS.

The position has access to sensitive and confidential information, the untimely or inappropriate release of which could cause acute embarrassment to the University, as well as litigation. Incorrect decisions/judgement will directly affect the UBC's reputation with the employer, health authorities, community and faculty, staff, alumni, and students.


Supervision Received
Reports to the Director, Student Health Service. Works independently. Informs Director of important issues related to the medical services of the SHS clinics.

Supervision Given
Provides leadership including direct and indirect management and supervision to all medical staff within the two SHS clinics at the UBC Vancouver Campus, including family physicians, specialists, and nurse practitioners. Supervises physicians by providing guidance and mentorship, ensuring appropriateness of job responsibilities, providing or directing the provision of medical training and development, evaluating performance, and responding to complaints, concerns and grievances.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Unrestricted medical doctor licensed to practice in British Columbia by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.

  • Member of the Canadian Medical Protective Association or equivalent for medical liability insurance.

  • Extensive experience in clinical practice and in administration.

  • An active UBC clinical teaching appointment is preferred .Hospital privilege within Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) Region is preferred, but an admitting privilege is not required.

  • Membership in the Division of Family Practice (DoFP) is preferred.

  • Membership in the Doctors of BC (DoBC) is preferred.

  • Knowledge of the UBC campus and of the workings of the Medical Services Commission or their equivalents in other provinces.

  • Experience and interest in promoting and engaging in medical education at SHS in collaboration with UBC or other universities and organizations.

  • Involvement in medical organizations, such as the Department of Family Practice, BC College of Family Physicians, DoBC, DoFP, Canadian Medical Association, or the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational and team building skills; a consultative management style; effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

  • Proven sensibility and appreciation of the role that indigeneity, gender, race, disability, gender identity, sexuality, and social background play in the experience of health, wellbeing, and health promotion & education in a university setting. Demonstrated commitment to social justice, inclusion, diversity, and health equity.
