The Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary Surgery team at Royal Columbian Hospital is ready to welcome two Full time Associate Physicians to join our HPB oncology program. The position will include management of both perioperative surgical and medical care, in conjunction with appropriate consulting services and under the direct supervision of the attending HPB surgeon. The Associate Physician will also provide initial consultations (with oversight by the attending HPB surgeon) for HPB patients in the RCH emergency room and the inpatient population. The Associate Physician will be expected to provide comprehensive discharge planning, with direct communication with General Practitioners and British Columbia Cancer Agency oncology services, to allow safe transition from the surgical service to the patient’s community.

Detailed Overview

Royal Columbian Hospital Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary surgery is conducting a search for an Associated Physician for the HPB surgical oncology program. The position will include management of Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary surgery inpatients. Patient management would include both perioperative surgical and medical care, in conjunction with appropriate consulting services and under the direct supervision of the attending HPB surgeon.

The position would also include providing initial consultations (with oversight by the attending HPB surgeon) for HPB patients in the RCH emergency room and the RCH inpatient population. The AP would also be expected to provide comprehensive discharge planning, with direct communication with GPs and BCCA oncology services, to allow safe transition from the surgical service to the patient’s community.


Responsibilities

  1. Inpatient and/or Emergency room consultations including recording a patient’s past medical history, surgical history, and current clinic scenario – development of a treatment plan with direct input and supervision by the attending HPB surgeon
  2. Completing daily inpatient HPB surgical ward rounds with the attending HPB surgeon, documenting patient progress and intervening in postoperative care as needed
  3. Updating medical records
  4. Requesting and ordering appropriate lab tests and/or diagnostic procedures as necessary
  5. Performing detailed examinations of the patient, patient wound check and surgical drain removal (supervised by the attending HPB surgeon)
  6. Creating and implementing patient care treatment plans
  7. Coordinating with other medical professionals and specialists as necessary
  8. Prescribing medications
  9. Patient discharge planning including direct communication with patient’s GP, specialists, and/or BCCA as needed
  10. Patient pre-habilitation and education
  11. Perioperative medical optimization for the HPB surgery patient


Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:


Successful completion of Part 1 of the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) or Steps 1 through 3 of the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLEs) and Education, Training and Experience Medical degree from a school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools.

Minimum of two (2) years of accredited postgraduate training as a medical or surgical specialist, verified by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC (CPSBC).

Proficiency in the English language as established by the CPSBC and eligibility for registration with the CPSBC in the Associate Physician class, under sponsorship by Fraser Health.

Valid Canadian Citizenship, be a permanent resident or be legally able to live and work in British Columbia.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification during the three-month training and orientation period.

COMPETENCIES:

  • Knowledge and skills to diagnose and manage common medical problems in the obstetric patient.
  • Confidence and experience in recognizing and initiating response to emergency situations such as shock, acute coronary syndrome, stroke, etc.
  • Ability to recognize medical instability and address initial priorities of resuscitation. Able to judge situations where discussion and reporting to senior and most responsible physicians is appropriate.
  • Excellent English communication, including with patients, families and other health care professionals.
  • Computer and written communication skills including order entry, clinical documentation, and ability to review relevant diagnostic information and health history.
  • Ability and comfort in working in a team-based environment.
  • Ability to carry out professional duties in the face of multiple, competing demands.
  • An interest in perioperative medicine would be an asset.
