Description

The Shelter Worker provides a safe and secure environment for clients, residents and visitors. The Shelter Worker interviews and screens potential clients, determines suitability and undertakes intake functions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ability to represent and work within the mission, vision & values of The Salvation Army and Ridge Meadows Ministries
  • Use a client-centered approach by consistently demonstrating compassion, respect and empathy in the administration of policies and procedures
  • Supports, where and when possible, the efforts of all clients and co-workers
  • Handles the admission, orientation and evaluation of clients
  • Takes responsibility for and records intake processes and decisions
  • Develops case histories for all incoming clients
  • Maintains availability for personal, practical and moral support
  • Monitors the activities of clients and accurately records day-to-day happenings
  • Performs internal and external security checks
  • Provides safe storage and recording of prescribed medications
  • Liaises with referral sources and other external agencies as needed
  • Coordinates client care relating to security issues
  • Involved in serving meals/snacks
  • Performs other assigned duties as required to ensure a safe and secure environment.

HOURS:

  • Shift Work, Full time midnight to 8am based on 32 hour per week. Work may include weekends and holidays

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Certifications:

  • Grade 12, plus specialized courses of up to six (6) months and/or completed up to two (2) years of Community College
  • possess valid CPR, First Aid and Non-Violent Crisis certification or obtain as condition of employment
  • successful obtainment of clearance through the Criminal Records Review Program
  • Food Safe and Naloxone training an asset
  • A current valid BC driver's license and clean driving record an asset

Experience:

  • Computer and word processing ability
  • Preference to those who have completed High School and have related experience

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Strong service ethic, a friendly disposition with the public and effective communication skills
  • Adaptability to change and frequent interruptions
  • Team oriented and able to take initiative with ability to work with minimum supervision
  • Willingness to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • High standards of integrity, judgment and confidentiality
  • Ability to work midnight to 8am
  • Computer and word processing ability

PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

Knowledge and interest in the programs and services of The Salvation Army and Ridge Meadows Ministries.

Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • Background check consent
  • A clear vulnerable sector screening
  • A clean drivers abstract
  • Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training
