Detailed Overview

Provides clinical and educational support to dietitians within the renal portfolio of Fraser Health. Liaises with and acts as a clinical resource for other renal healthcare professionals. Conducts research related to renal nutrition and provides research and quality improvement support to renal dietitians.


Responsibilities

  1. Acts as a clinical dietetic resource to dietitians and other healthcare professionals regarding dietetic best practice, by developing and providing education sessions and reviewing nutrition related content for the renal department.
  2. Supports the development and knowledge translation of renal nutrition specific Clinical Decision Support Tools (CDST) as needed.
  3. Supports current practice and departmental change by identifying and initiating quality improvement activities.
  4. Provides assistance to Dietitian Practice Leaders to measure key competencies and other performance indicators, participates in skill assessment and development of staff, proposes recommendations or feedback on individual or group education needs.
  5. Keeps up to date with and critically evaluates recent renal related nutrition research, and supports renal dietitians to critically review literature and conduct local research.
  6. Attends local renal related dietitian meetings and acts as a Fraser Health representative on the provincial renal RD meetings.
  7. Provides patient care in all areas of practice when not providing educator activities as determined by the Dietitian Practice Leader.
  8. Performs other related duties, as required.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience

Masters Degree in Nutrition, Dietetics or related discipline from a recognized educational institution, plus successful completion of an approved dietetic internship program.
Five (5) years recent related experience in renal related area of practice, including one (1) year experience in supervisory/leadership role, providing education/training to health care professionals or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Current registration with the College of Dietitians of BC and Restricted Acts A and B preferred Valid BC Driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle for business-related purposes as required.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of the etiology of renal disease, renal therapy practice including kidney care (predialysis), hemodialysis (including IDPN), home hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and post transplant.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize nutrition related concerns for patients/clients with multiple medical conditions.
  • Demonstrated skills in food preparation and nutrient composition, medication/nutrient interactions, relevant metabolic changes in response to renal disease.
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge and understanding of the psycho-social economic considerations of end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
  • Demonstrated counseling skills to effect a change in eating behaviour, and ability to establish a person centered and culturally safe approach to renal nutrition care.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to teach individuals and groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others within a multidisciplinary environment.
