General Description The Lands-Based Educator & Cultural Education Lead is an educational and cultural leader within the classroom and the broader school community. This professional ensures that outdoor and environmental curriculum guidelines are delivered in a way that commits to equity, diversity, inclusivity, and high expectations for student learning. The role is deeply rooted in Mi'kmaw culture, traditions, and the local Sipekne'katik context. In addition to delivering instruction, this educator serves as a cultural lead, organizing school-wide functions, coordinating community involvement, and demonstrating strong leadership in Indigenous land-based education. The position reports directly to the School Principal. Responsibilities: Instruction & Curriculum Delivery - 30% Deliver instruction aligned with Nova Scotia curriculum guidelines, integrating land-based learning, outdoor education, and Mi'kmaw ways of knowing. Create and deliver engaging instructional units that connect students with the natural world through outdoor and land-based learning experiences. Foster a positive, safe, inclusive, and respectful classroom and outdoor learning environment that supports student success. Educate students using culturally relevant teaching practices that promote engagement and achievement of learning outcomes. Student Assessment & Individualized Support – 20% Prepare, administer, and assess assignments, outdoor projects, and experiential learning activities to evaluate student understanding and progress. Assess student achievement using a variety of assessment tools and practices aligned with curriculum outcomes. Participate in the development and implementation of Individual Program Plans (IPPs) for students requiring adaptations or specialized supports. Cultural Leadership & Community Engagement – 20% Serve as the school's Cultural Education Lead by planning, organizing, and facilitating school-wide cultural events, celebrations, and learning opportunities. Coordinate schedules and support the meaningful involvement of Elders and traditional knowledge keepers within the school community. Build and maintain effective relationships with students, families, school staff, Elders, and external community partners. Communication & Student Records – 15% Maintain accurate student attendance records and report absences in accordance with school policies and provincial regulations. Communicate student progress regularly with parents and guardians in accordance with school procedures. Classroom & Resource Management – 10% Maintain organized, safe, and welcoming classroom and outdoor learning environments. Manage, clean, and maintain outdoor equipment, learning materials, and gear inventory. Professional Engagement and Development - 5% Participate in staff meetings, professional learning opportunities, school functions, and other required meetings. Support school-wide initiatives and contribute positively to the overall school community.

Qualifications and Experience/Skills include but are not limited to: Valid Nova Scotia Teacher Certificate/license. No minimum experience required. New graduates welcome. Demonstrated experience, certification, or specialization in Lands-Based Education, Environmental Education, or Outdoor Leadership. Deep fluency and knowledge of Mi'kmaw culture, language, and traditions; local context familiarity is considered a major asset. Knowledge and skill in outdoor education pedagogy and content to provide high-quality teaching. Strong independent leadership skills, demonstrating the ability to be self-pacing and self-directed in designing land-based educational programs. The ability to demonstrate fair and ethical judgements. Knowledge of Indigenous and/or Mi’kmaw communities/organizations is preferred. Must have access to reliable transportation. A Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry check is required. Working Conditions 5 days per week, Monday to Friday 8:15am to 3:15pm daily, 35 hours weekly
