Summary

This volunteer role coordinates and leads the beach clean program, with a specific focus on day of activities. This volunteer position will work closely with Surfrider Canada's BCU manager and Surfrider SVI's BCU Logistics Coordinator.

About This Opportunity

South Vancouver Chapter, Core Volunteer, Beach Clean Lead

Position type: Two-year volunteer commitment (approx. 1-3 hours/week; 3+ hours/week for weeks with a planned beach clean)

Reports to: BCU Program Logistics Coordinator and the Executive Commitee

Summary: This role is involved in coordinating and supporting clean ups. This includes, collecting event items and bringing to that months site for set up, directing and coordinating other Surfrider Volunteers, supporting measuring and analyzing data, speaking in front of large groups, and working with volunteers at the clean up to engage the public in conversations around marine debris and plastic pollution.

Key Responsibilities

Beach kit/remote kit maintenance (monthly) replacing broken items, keeping kits in order, first aid kits in date. Keeping files for BC literature and forms, ordering BC items and distributing items throughout South Vancouver Island, if required. Supporting remote clean ups. Supporting community clean ups. Supporting sorting of waste during the event. Sharing information/education on the Beach Clean program in the community/social media/Surfrider Vancouver communications team. Attends Surfrider public meetings & events when available. Joins/follows/likes; official Surfrider Vancouver Slack workspace and social media pages.

Qualifications

Familiar with all of Surfrider Vancouver programs & campaigns. Becomes a Surfrider Foundation member https://surfrider.ca/join Organized and can dedicate his/her time to accomplish monthly tasks Strong communicator, leader, team member, and public speaker Familiarity with MS Word, Excel, Google docs & calendar, Mailchimp and WordPress Uses popular social media: Facebook, Instagram Holds BC drivers license, has access to a medium to large sized vehicle and is willing to use their vehicle for chapter operations
