Education: Bachelor's degree. Substance abuse/addiction counselling. Work setting: Counselling centres. Rural area. Residential treatment centre. Rehabilitation centre and special health institution. Mental health institution, facility or clinic. Tasks: Provide therapy. Implement treatment plans. Apply psychological theory and principles regarding behaviour and mental processes. Counsel clients, provide therapy and mediation services, and facilitate group sessions. Maintain accurate records. Administer standard psychological tests for assessment. Supervision: 5-10 people. Certificates, licences, memberships, and courses : Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification . Membership in a provincial or territorial psychological association. Registered Marriage and Family Therapist. Certification with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Membership in the Canadian Psychological Association. Policy and program experience: Addiction or substance abuse. Type of treatment experience: Behaviour modification or behavioural therapy. Cognitive therapy. Crisis intervention counselling. Psychodynamic analytic therapy. Psychotherapy. Area of specialization: Drug addiction. Work conditions and physical capabilities: Work under pressure. Personal suitability: Client focus.
