Title: Corporate Health & Safety Manager
Reports To: Sr. Manager IMS & Quality Engineering
Location: 24 Napoleon Road, Barrie
Job Purpose: The Corporate Health & Safety Manager is responsible for designing, leading, and actively executing the organization’s Health & Safety framework across global operations. This role leads the development, deployment, and enforcement of corporate Health & Safety standards and risk governance, while also remaining operationally engaged—personally conducting audits, field assessments, and risk reviews within Barrie, Ontario manufacturing and distribution facilities.
The role balances hands on execution locally with enterprise level leadership globally, ensuring that high severity risks are identified, controlled, and consistently managed across regions, jurisdictions, and operating models. This position focuses on preventing serious and critical incidents, strengthening due diligence defensibility, and reducing operational risk volatility, rather than serving as a purely administrative or advisory function.
This role provides direct leadership and performance management for assigned Health & Safety specialist roles. The Corporate Health & Safety Manager is accountable for setting priorities, developing capability, coaching performance, and ensuring specialist resources are deployed effectively against enterprise and local risk priorities.
The Corporate Health & Safety Manager works directly on the floor, in logistics areas, and within operational environments in Barrie, while enabling and governing execution through regional leaders, site leadership, and specialist resources internationally.
Key Responsibilities:
Corporate Health & Safety Governance & Standards
- Establish and maintain global Health & Safety policies, standards, and minimum control requirements.
- Define non negotiable enterprise controls for critical risks while allowing compliant local adaptation.
- Act as the corporate authority for Health & Safety governance and escalation.
Health & Safety Team Leadership & Development
- Provide direct leadership, coaching, and performance management for assigned Health & Safety and Ergonomist roles.
- Set clear annual objectives, key performance indicators, and priorities aligned to enterprise and site risk exposure.
- Conduct regular one-on-ones, performance reviews, and development planning.
- Develop specialist capability to operate effectively across manufacturing, distribution, and remote work environments.
- Delegate work appropriately while retaining accountability for quality, effectiveness, and outcomes.
- Ensure workload planning, prioritization, and performance outcomes are aligned with corporate expectations and annual objectives.
- Ensure clarity of role boundaries between Corporate, Site, and Specialist functions.
Hands On Auditing, Assessments & Field Engagement
- Personally conduct Health & Safety audits, workplace inspections, and risk assessments within Barrie manufacturing and distribution facilities.
- Perform floor level observations, task assessments, and verification of control effectiveness.
- While this role remains personally engaged in select high risk audits and field assessments, routine execution and technical depth activities are delegated to specialist roles, with the Corporate Health & Safety Manager retaining accountability for outcomes and effectiveness.
- Partner directly with supervisors, managers, engineering teams, and company-wide teams to resolve identified risks.
- Oversight of occupational return-to-work programs by providing health and safety risk, compliance, and system guidance in collaboration with HR and operations.
- Validate that corrective actions are implemented correctly and working as intended, not just closed.
Enterprise Risk Management & Critical Injury Prevention
- Identify and govern high severity, low frequency risk classes across global operations.
- Lead development and deployment of enterprise programs targeting repeat risk patterns (e.g. falls, heat exposure, energy interaction).
- Support sites in translating enterprise controls into practical, executable actions.
ISO 45001 & Health & Safety Management System Leadership
- Provide hands on leadership and strategic ownership of the ISO 45001 Health & Safety Management System.
- Participate directly in internal audits and readiness reviews.
- Ensure consistent system application across manufacturing, distribution, and remote work environments.
Regulatory Compliance, Inspections & Investigations
- Personally support Barrie based regulatory inspections as required.
- Partner and work directly with Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development of Ontario (MLITSD) during site audits and follow up investigations as required.
- Provide governance and technical oversight for global regulatory compliance.
- Participate in and oversee serious and high potential incident investigations, including onsite investigation support when required.
- Ensure root cause quality and verify effectiveness of preventive actions.
Reporting, Trend Analysis & Leadership Communication
- Analyze injury, incident, and risk data to identify systemic trends.
- Prepare and present clear, plain‑language risk reporting for senior leadership.
- Translate operational risk into business, financial, and compliance implications.
Enablement of Global & Regional Execution
- Support regional and site leaders through standards, tools, training frameworks, and coaching.
- Periodically perform onsite or remote audits at global locations as needed.
- Ensure consistent application of expectations across all regions.
Budget & Resource Management
- Manage the H&S budget, including training, PPE, and external services
- Review, prioritize, and approve H&S‑related initiatives and investments recommended by specialist roles, balancing regulatory risk, injury prevention, and organizational capacity
Continuous Improvement Mindset + Additional H&S Related Projects & Technical Support
- Lead or support additional health & safety related initiatives and technical projects as required to support regulatory compliance and continuous improvement objectives.
- Participate as a member of the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC), contributing to workplace inspections, incident reviews, and corrective-action follow-up
Education & Experience:
- Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health, Engineering, or related discipline
- Minimum 8+ years progressive Health & Safety experience, including leadership responsibility for professional or specialist roles
- Demonstrated experience leading, coaching, or managing Health & Safety professionals or specialist roles
