๐ช๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ต๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ฝ๐ ๐๐ผ ๐๐ฒ๐น๐ฐ๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ Sude Gunes ๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ ๐ท๐ผ๐ถ๐ป๐ ๐ฃ๐ต๐ ๐๐๐๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐! ๐๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ ๐ฆ๐๐ฑ๐ฒ: Sude Gunes joined the lab in March 2026 as a joint PhD student affiliated with both UGent (CompOmics, VIB-UGent Center for Medical Biotechnology) and VUB (Bio2Byte). She holds a Bachelorโs degree in Bioengineering and Master's degree in Polymer Science and Engineering from Izmir Institute of Technology in Turkiye. ๐ฆ๐๐ฑ๐ฒโ๐ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ต ๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ผ๐บ๐ฝ๐ข๐บ๐ถ๐ฐ๐: Sude's work focuses on post-translational modifications (PTMs), protein structures, and conformational variability. By combining mass spectrometry-based PTM identification with molecular dynamics simulations, she aims to uncover how PTMs influence protein structure, function and dynamics, providing mechanistic insights into their roles in cellular processes and disease. ๐๐ฒ๐๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐น๐๐ฐ๐ธ ๐ฆ๐๐ฑ๐ฒ! ๐

Proteins are the molecular machines that make cells work. They perform a wide variety of functions through interactions with each other and many additional molecules. Traditionally, proteins are described in a single static state (a picture). It is now increasingly recognised that many proteins can adopt multiple states and move between these conformational states dynamically (a movie).
We investigate how the dynamics, conformational states and available experimental data of proteins relates to their amino acid sequence. Underlying physical and chemical principles are computationally unravelled through data integration, analysis and machine learning, so connecting them to biological events and improving our understanding of the way proteins work.
