Job Description Summary

Provides a comprehensive range of psychological services for registered and admitted UBC students including diagnostic assessment to support formulation and treatment planning for common mental health conditions, treatment interventions, as well as referral to the most appropriate level of care. Services are delivered within an integrative, multidisciplinary stepped care model that includes collaboration with medical providers and psychiatry. The role includes single session and brief individual therapy, group therapy, crisis intervention, consultation in training and supervision. Participates in training and supervision of Doctoral residents in a CPA accredited residency program, as well as the development and delivery of programs which enhance student mental wellbeing. This position actively champions, fosters and ensures the inclusion of voices that have been underrepresented or discouraged in the work they perform.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Associate Director, Counselling Services, Student Health and Wellbeing. Works cooperatively as a member of a team of professionals, actively participating in and contributing to the development and delivery of effective and efficient psychological services. Works in collaboration with Health and Wellbeing units, Student Affairs units, Faculties and other University departments and student organizations.

Work Performed

  1. Provides individual and group therapy for a broad range of personal concerns as well as crisis intervention.

  2. Conducts diagnostic assessment within a brief, clinically appropriate scope, to clarify students’ mental health needs, inform diagnosis where indicated, support treatment planning and facilitate coordination of care.

  3. Works within an integrated, collaborative stepped care system of mental health support, including clinical consultation and coordination with medical providers to support diagnostic clarification and continuity of care, including providing referrals for students to resources on and off campus as indicated. Resources include online self-help tools, workshops, peer support, group programs, individual counselling, medical care and crisis intervention.

  4. Participates in case management and administrative meetings and other broader Student Health and Wellbeing meetings as required.

  5. Develops and delivers mental health programming that builds students’ capacity to manage mental health difficulties, including orientations, outreach, workshops, seminars, groups and other events and resources that help students normalize stress, learn how to manage stress and maintain wellbeing, and how to seek support when needed.

  6. Participates in the development of policies, processes and plans that promote student wellbeing as well as policies and procedures to ensure effective service delivery.

  7. Provides clinical consultation and expertise related to diagnostic complexity, risk assessment, and treatment planning within Student Health and Wellbeing and across Health and Wellbeing partners.

  8. Provides consultation services to faculty and staff regarding the impact of policies, processes and programs on student well-being as well as specific student concerns.

  9. Collaborates with students, faculties, departments and other student services to develop and deliver programs and services that enhance student learning and wellbeing such as Early Alert.

  10. Coordinates the design, implementation, and analysis of program evaluation and research projects specific to area of coordination.

  11. Liaises with community stakeholders, professional organizations, post-secondary institutions, and other partners to support effective mental health program development and delivery.

  12. Coordinates programs, initiatives, and other special events related to the work of the unit.

  13. Provides advanced clinical supervision and training for Doctoral residents in intake assessment, diagnostic formulation, individual and group therapy, and supervision of practicum students.

  14. Prepares reports, publications and other documents as required.

  15. Performs other duties consistent with the mandate of Student Health and Wellbeing as requested.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Must be able to act with a considerable degree of autonomy and independence in the provision of psychological assistance to students while adhering to the ethical standards of the profession. Poor professional judgment or unethical practice would be extremely detrimental to student wellbeing and in some cases could be life threatening. It would also have a significant negative impact on public relations for Student Health and Wellbeing and the University and in some cases result in legal liability for the University.

Supervision Received

Acts independently within established clinical and ethical guidelines. Works within a model of collegial consultation and collaboration as a member of the Counselling Services team. Provides clinical services and programs under the direction of the Director of Counselling Services.

Supervision Given

Provides supervision to Doctoral Residents.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own

  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

  • Ph.D. in Counselling or Clinical Psychology or a related field. Eligible for certification as a Licensed Psychologist in British Columbia. Minimum of seven years of experience in clinical/counselling psychology.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated competence in diagnostic formulation and evidence-informed treatment of common mental health disorders within a brief and integrated care context.

University or college counselling experience preferred.

Training and experience in the clinical supervision of graduate students preferred.

Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory and experience in program development, consultation and outreach.

Possession of personal attributes that facilitate teamwork and the development of effective working relationships with a wide range of students, faculty, and staff.

Knowledge of the unique issues facing university students and university life.

Expertise and experience in treatment of a wide range of post-secondary student concerns including stress, depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, career/life planning and transition issues required.

Bi-lingual or multi-lingual an asset.
