ABOUT SUSTAIN SU Sustain SU is the University of Alberta Students’ Union’s arm of sustainability. We strive to give students an opportunity to gain and work on leadership skills, while also providing them a chance to dip their toes into the world of sustainability. We provide a diverse range of services and opportunities for involvement to the campus community. Our programs during the school year include a sustainable makers market (Green For Good Market), a Bike Library & Workshop, a blog team, an events team, and our campus thrift store (SUBsprout).
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Sustain SU for the Fall and Winter! We are currently recruiting senior volunteers (called Sustainability Leaders) for the Green For Good Market Team, Special Events Team, SUBsprout Thrift Store Team, and the Sustainable Outreach Team (formerly called Sustainable Actions Team). The deadline to apply will be August 7th 2026 at 9 AM.
SUSTAINABLE LEADER POSITION SUMMARY Broadly speaking these volunteers can expect to commit ~5 - 7 hours per week (with slight variations depending on the team), late August 2026 until late April 2027. In this position you’ll assist the Sustain SU Coordinator in hiring and managing the Eco Ambassadors (junior volunteers)*, learn leadership volunteer management skills, and engage in local sustainability. This position requires bi-weekly and monthly meetings, as well as shifts running the actual team. Sustainable leaders will be required to attend an in-person interview between August 10th - 14th, followed by orientation on August 19th. *Sustainable Leaders for the Green for Good Market team will not oversee any junior volunteers. THE TEAMS
The Green For Good Market team: This team of 2-3 senior volunteers will help run our monthly sustainable makers market located on the first floor of SUB! This role consists of tabling, planning / running engagement events, and managing day-of logistics. This team will not oversee any junior volunteers. Wednesday availability is mandatory for this team as the market takes place once a month on Wednesdays from 10AM - 5PM.
Sustainable Outreach Team (SOT) (formerly Sustainable Actions Team) This team of 2 senior volunteers is tasked with overseeing all outreach opportunities for Sustain SU with the help of a group of ~10 junior volunteers. This includes tabling fairs, poster campaigns, managing our monthly newsletter, and producing blog posts. This year the team will also be undertaking a waste-reduction research campaign.
Special Events Team (SET) This team of 2-3 senior volunteers is tasked with planning out external events designed to engage the campus community in sustainability. There is flexibility in the types of events they run but previous examples include a Wildfire panel, a Sustainable Research Night, and a Sustainability Case Competition. This team also plans out volunteer appreciation events for our team of roughly 80 volunteers. This team requires a high level of commitment and can expect to meet with staff for a minimum of 1 hour each week plus an additional several hours of work each week spent running team meetings and planning / organizing / preparing for events. The Special Events team is one of our higher time commitment teams.
SUBsprout Thrift Store Team This team of 4 senior volunteers, alongside a group of ~10 junior volunteers, will help run Sustain SU’s on campus thrift store, SUBsprout! Volunteers can expect to run sorting shifts with a team of junior volunteers as well as take on the role of “on shift manager” during our weekly Sprout Ups. SLs can anticipate having one sorting shift every week as well as longer Sprout Up shifts on Wednesdays or Thursdays. The thrift store team has regularly scheduled volunteer shifts, meaning that while it requires a higher level of commitment, shifts and hours are consistent and stay the same throughout a semester. Availability on Wednesdays and Thursdays is strongly preferred. The thrift store is one of our high time commitment teams.
EQUITY AND INCLUSION The UASU’s mission is to serve, engage, and represent students. To do that well we need an organization that is representative of the students we serve. We are committed to creating a diverse environment that fosters a sense of belonging and empowerment. We actively encourage applications from members of groups experiencing barriers to equity.
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS Please complete your application through this link. The deadline to apply is 9:00AM on August 7th. For questions about this posting, please contact Sustain SU at sustain@su.ualberta.ca.
