The Prevention Facilitator/Educator is a member of the LCFASD team, with specific direction in raising awareness and prevention of FASD in Alberta, through participation in the FASD The Prevention Conversation: A Shared Responsibility Project.
Through various presentations, workshops, training opportunities, conversations and the use of social media engaging health and social service providers, women of childbearing age and their partners, and community individuals, the Prevention Facilitator/Educator will increase FASD awareness and prevention across the Region.
Using evidence-based practices to screen for alcohol use in pregnancy, increase awareness about the effects of binge drinking during pregnancy, increase knowledge of community resources, and creating community connections between health and social service agencies, and the FASD Service Networks, the Prevention Facilitator/Educator will work to develop wrap around services in a respectful, collaborative environment, supporting women and their partners.
This position will work within existing networks and partnership and related collaborations to enhance community capacity to prevent FASD and to provide support to women of childbearing age in the reduction of the consumption of alcohol during pregnancy.
Duties And Responsibilities
Program Delivery, provided with the appropriate educational tools and resources:
Initiate collaborations (new and existing) and facilitate social and professional networking opportunities through new creative ideas and open communication with all sectors involved with the Network and other FASD-related service providers (e.g. Primary Care Networks, AHS – Mental Health, colleges, universities, CFSA, PDD, to name a few) Provide training / education to health and social service providers to increase their capacity to educate and support women and their partners to reduce the use of alcohol during pregnancy Provide increased awareness / training to women of childbearing age and their partners about the effect of binge drinking / use of alcohol during pregnancy Provide increased awareness / training to community partners / agencies supporting women of childbearing years how to engage appropriately with women about the use of alcohol during pregnancy Increase knowledge of community services available to women and their partners who may be concerned about alcohol consumption while pregnant Understand the Network system Know the Network community and their existing capacity Support the Network in the planning, implementation and delivery of FASD-related awareness and prevention events Identify, support, train and educate others within the outlying areas of the Network vicinity, to engage in community capacity building and develop FASD awareness and prevention – through the FASD Prevention Conversation with their own community to further enhance awareness and prevention to decrease incidents of FASD Engage in ongoing presentations / conversations Complete program evaluations as required with participants of training sessions
General And Administrative
Maintain accurate data regarding numerical attendance and required evaluation data Provide program latest information and updated statistics as required Maintain and submit accurate mileage and expense logs for reimbursement Participate in performance reviews Attend scheduled staff and supervision meetings Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications, Skills & Conditions of Employment
Qualifications
A degree or diploma in the field of Health, Human and/or Social Services or related field, is required A minimum of 2 years related employment experience, e.g. high risk populations, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder or community development Alberta Class 5 License and a reliable vehicle, available at all times
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Knowledge of FASD Knowledge of Community Development and ability to enhance community capacity Ability to promote FASD to health and social service agencies, women of childbearing age and their partners, and community groups in a creative manner Strong presentation and facilitation skills Public Speaking ability Ability to facilitate change in attitudes and beliefs Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, result oriented, good time management, strong organizational, problem solving and advocacy skills Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel programs / computer literate / and be social media savvy. Familiarity with issues of poverty, homelessness and community Familiarity working with high-risk populations and an understanding of Aboriginal and other cultures, history and current issues
Conditions Of Employment
Criminal Record Check (with Vulnerable Sector Screening). Child Intervention Record Check. A current Class 5 driver’s license, satisfactory driver’s abstract and good insurance history is necessary to be insured by LCFASD. This position will require driving and use of personal vehicle when the LCFASD vehicle is not available. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
The Prevention Facilitator/Educator will work in the Lakeland area as designated by the LCFASD Board of Directors. The LCFASD main office is in Cold Lake, Alberta.
The Prevention Facilitator/Educator will travel frequently within and beyond the Lakeland service area, this position will require driving and use of personal vehicle when the LCFASD vehicle is not available.
Proof of third-party insurance in the amount of 2 million dollars is required.
Benefits Of Working With The LCFASD
Salary: Hourly wage starting between $25.18 – $27.29. Hourly wage will be determined by education and experience.
Schedule
Hours of work are flexible within a one-month time frame: 36.25 hours per week not to exceed 145 hours per 4-week period. Hours may be outside of LCFASD office hours (8:15-4:30pm) Overtime may be required.
