Reporting to the Director, Media Relations & Medical Affairs, the Senior Advisor is an important part of the AHS Communications team. The Senior Advisor is responsible for planning and delivering strategic communications to key portfolios within medical affairs and media relations, as well as providing cross-functional support to other teams within AHS Communications as needed. Works on strategic initiatives impacting doctors and clinicians as well as with programs with a provincial scope. Working across agencies and with various stakeholders will be key to this role. This position works with stakeholders throughout AHS and its partners to help achieve organizational and corporate goals. The senior advisor manages multiple projects with tight timelines to convert complex information into a variety of mediums for diverse audiences. This opportunity offers the ability to work in a hybrid model (on/off site) within Alberta, with occasional travel required to support special events as needed.

Description:

The senior advisor provides program and initiative level support to all levels of AHS management within assigned projects. Liaises with partner agencies, key leaders and the communications team to produce a variety of communications materials that address issues and support strategies and goals. Provides strategic direction as well as develops communication tools including complex and advanced strategic communications plans, briefing and speaking notes, website and video content, news releases, newsletter articles, print materials, etc. Seeks out opportunities for proactive communications, including media, public and stakeholder communications. Identifies and manages risks associated with provincial programs and medical affairs. Provides and leads proactive and reactive issues management addressing emergent and unanticipated communication challenges, including developing key messages, briefing notes, preparation materials and news releases. Works independently to solve unique and complex problems, identifies solutions and makes decisions as appropriate. Manages media requests and coverage, including identifying and preparing spokespeople, notifying media and arranging venues and events. Ensures appropriate stakeholders are identified, informed and involved. Notifies leadership of emerging issues. Ensures all work adheres to department and organizational policies and guidelines. Provides support and coverage to the Media Relations and Medical Affairs team in support of the broader AHS communications team.

Required Qualifications:

Degree or diploma in communications, Public Relations, journalism or related field. Five or more years of progressive experience. Ability to produce a variety of communications plans and materials that support initiatives within Media Relations and Medical Affairs in support of the broader AHS communications team. Ability to understand, utilize and communicate complex information. Ability to give advice to senior leaders and physicians. Strong diplomacy and relationship building skills. Demonstrated ability to work with confidential, sensitive information in a changing environment. Capable of working at a senior level with little supervision and minimal direction. Proven organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and juggle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrated experience in being a self-motivated team player with strong commitment to quality and process improvement.

Additional Required Qualifications:

This position requires being part of an on-call rotation to support after hours communications. The position can be located anywhere in Alberta.
