About the role
Canadian Mennonite Editor (1.0 FTE) Job Description The Editor, reporting to the Publisher, leads the day-to-day editorial activities of Canadian Mennonite and works closely with the Publisher, Associate Editor, and Graphic Designer to advance the publication's mission and strategic goals.
Together with the Publisher, and in regular communication with the Board, the Editor helps develop and implement a vision and strategy for how Canadian Mennonite serves the church as a source of information, inspiration, and interconnectedness.
The Editor is responsible for: Leading all editorial operations. Supervising and supporting the editorial team. Partnering with the Publisher on strategic planning, audience growth, and organizational development. Ensuring editorial content advances the mission of the publication and reflects editorial integrity, journalistic ethics, and care for the health of the church. Maintaining accountability for editorial quality, production schedules, and publication standards.
In collaboration with the Associate Editor and Graphic Designer, the Editor directs the assignment, selection, editing, and presentation of editorial content to further the publication's goals and create compelling material that engages readers across generations.
Together with the Publisher and editorial team, the Editor exercises sound judgment and makes decisions regarding complex or controversial editorial matters. In consultation with affected parties and, where appropriate, the Board, church leaders, advisory groups, or other stakeholders, the Editor works to address concerns in a manner consistent with Board policies, editorial agreements, organizational goals, and journalistic best practices.
Together with the Publisher and editorial team, the Editor responds appropriately to reader feedback, questions, concerns, and complaints.
Specific responsibilities include:

Editorial · Set and monitor the balance of features, perspectives, story sources, represented regions and story types to serve the church and readers in line with editorial goals. · Develop annual and issue-by-issue editorial plans, establishing feature themes and editorial priorities. · Lead editorial planning meetings and prepare contributor briefs and editorial direction for each issue. · Select columnists and establish overall themes for columns and recurring series. · Set or negotiate payment rates and ensure appropriate rights are secured for all material before publication. · Write, or invite other to write, the editorial for each issue. · Write and contribute news, feature, analysis and digital content as editorial priorities require. · Provide substantive editing of major features and conduct final proof review before publication. · Ensure author copies, contributor payments and thank-you letters are sent as needed. · Maintain relationships with peer publications and press associations, such as the Canadian Christian Communicators Association and Meetinghouse. · Lead the editorial team in developing new approaches to storytelling and, together with the Publisher, arrange training for staff and correspondents as needed. · Direct editorial content and innovation across all platforms, ensuring consistency across print, website and social media.

Production and Distribution · Together with the Associate Editor and Graphic Designer, ensure smooth, on-time production and distribution of content in print and digital formats. Oversee editorial workflow from planning through publication. · Manage editorial calendars and production schedules, ensuring deadlines are met throughout the editorial process.

Staffing · Interview and recommend to the Publisher the hiring of staff who report to the Editor. · Assign duties to, supervise, mentor and conduct performance reviews for staff who report to the Editor, providing updates to the Publisher on review outcomes. · Mentor freelance writers, interns and residents. · Lead regular editorial meetings. · Foster a collaborative and productive editorial culture.

Constituency Relations · In consultation with the Publisher, attend regional church meetings, conferences, and other gatherings as appropriate to represent the magazine, solicit feedback and story ideas, and cultivate relationships with readers and contributors. · Serve as a public ambassador for the magazine through speaking engagements and other opportunities that raise its profile and strengthen engagement with Mennonite communities. · Build and maintain relationships with church communicators, artists, writers, photographers, and other content contributors. · Foster strong working relationships with regional and national church bodies, denominational partners, and other key stakeholders. · Identify and encourage new voices and contributors that reflect the diversity of Mennonite communities across Canada.
What You Bring
· A strong commitment to and knowledge of the diverse Mennonite faith community and Canadian Mennonite Publishing Service’s specific ministry and mission. · A post-secondary degree and a passion for continuous learning. · Strong written and oral communications skills; must be able to communicate accurately and effectively with diverse audiences. · Prior knowledge and experience in the fields of journalism and editing an asset. · Appropriate technical knowledge for digital communications and remote collaboration. · Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
Organizational Structure Direct reports include: Associate Editor, Graphic Designer, Communications Manager, Social Media Coordinator and Regional Correspondents. Salary and Benefits The salary scale (at 1.0 FTE) for this position is $70,000 - $85,086 (commensurate with experience), plus health benefits and pension plan. This position would be fully remote with some travel required.
