Reporting to the Manager, Calgary Support Services and in close consultation with the Director of Programs and the Manager, Medicine Hat Support Services, the Clinical Lead will be responsible for leading the SafeLink Alberta nursing team in Medicine Hat and Calgary. Leadership responsibilities will include onboarding and mentorship of new team members, acting as the primary liaison for the SafeLink Alberta Medical Director, monitoring training and competencies, ensuring adherence to clinical standards and policies for practice and data protection, and supporting program development, delivery, and evaluation. The Clinical Lead will also actively participate in nursing activities for STBBI testing and treatment.
This is a full-time term position with an anticipated end date of March 31, 2027, with possibility of extension. The position is based at SafeLink Alberta's operational site in Calgary and requires 25 to 35 hours of work per week, Monday through Friday. Services will be provided throughout SafeLink Alberta's provincial catchment area, including Medicine Hat, Calgary, and rural communities across the South Zone. Travel within southern Alberta is required, along with occasional evening and weekend work to support testing events.
What you will do
Community Engagement and Clinical Care Work in collaboration with the SafeLink Alberta nursing counterparts and Medical Director to provide STBBI testing and treatment services to members of key populations. Maintain a special focus on the identification and reduction of syphilis across southern Alberta. Work in collaboration with the Support Services and Community Engagement teams, as well as with Nursing counterparts across the organization to coordinate testing events and align standards of care. Provide system navigation for program participants and work to minimize barriers to care by building partnerships and coordinating a network of services. Ensure on-going support to clients through the development of mutually agreed upon contact plans, maintaining regular appointments and telephone calls. Provide access to and facilitate integrated referral pathways with other SafeLink Alberta and community services related to identified needs. Maintain current knowledge of local testing and treatment services as well as public health trends; adjust project activities in response. Provide additional nursing care when required and within scope.
Health Promotion, Education, and Capacity Building Provide evidence-based health education on topics such as sexually transmitted and blood borne infections, sexual health, and general physical and mental health. Focus on increasing public awareness and uptake for testing related to syphilis and congenital syphilis. Engage in prevention discussions and activities, including individual education and the distribution of STBBI prevention supplies (safer sex and substance use equipment) based on participant need. Develop and maintain inter-agency collaborative relationships with community partners to enhance service delivery models and to reduce barriers. Includes participation in community meetings and networks. Maintain and enhance knowledge of emerging information and trends related to sexual health, substance use, social determinants of health, and the specific challenges faced by priority populations through ongoing self-directed learning. In partnership with the Community Engagement team, develop and facilitate education sessions (virtual and in-person) to community partners, service providers, members of key populations, post- secondary students, and members of the general public regarding syphilis and other STBBI’s when needed.
Administration Act as the Lead Custodian, alongside the Medical Director, and adhere to all custodian responsibilities as outlined in the SafeLink Alberta Policies and Procedure manual. As an approved Netcare user, adhere to all responsibilities per SafeLink Alberta Policies and Procedures manual. Maintain clinical records and meet reporting, confidentiality, and communication requirements of the SafeLink Alberta Medical Director. Maintain program statistics and documentation and participate in ongoing program evaluation and reporting. Ensure project accountability through maintenance of outcome-based reporting.
Leadership Lead the nursing team across SafeLink Alberta, in both Medicine Hat and Calgary. Onboard new nursing team members and provide ongoing support and mentorship. Act as the primary liaison for the Medical Director and other key community partners. Demonstrate a commitment to fostering Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) initiatives, actively participate in these efforts within the organization, and promote an inclusive environment for all individuals. With the support of the Managers of Medicine Hat and Calgary Support Services, ensure nursing training and competencies are maintained. Ensure adherence to clinical standards and policies. Ensure adherence to documentation, data collection, and data storage standards. Participate in and provide guidance on clinical areas of program development, delivery, evaluation, and reporting.
What you will bring
Bachelor’s degree in nursing. Current registration with relevant professional body (CARNA/CAPNA). Minimum of two years of direct work experience in a front-line or client-focused support setting. Equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered. Current Standard First Aid & CPR or BLS certification required. Phlebotomy certification is an asset. Proven proficiency in client support, informal counselling, and case management. A strength-based, risk-reduction, and human-rights philosophy of service provision required. Possess foundational knowledge on IDEA principles in line with SafeLink Alberta’s values. Demonstrated cultural awareness and responsiveness in working across diverse populations, including experience in working with people who use drugs required. Strong knowledge of sexual and reproductive health, mental health, and substance-use is an asset. Foundational knowledge of Syphilis, HIV, HCV, and other STBBI prevention, testing, and treatments. Foundational knowledge of mental health and addictions-related issues and interventions. Foundational knowledge of, and theoretical orientation to, intersectionality, trauma- informed, and anti-oppressive practice frameworks. Thorough knowledge of local social service programs and community resources is an asset. High ethical standards and professionalism, with a demonstrated ability to adhere to strict confidentiality practices. Basic computer skills, including the use of Microsoft Office required. Public speaking and presentation experience is an asset. Non-Violent Crisis Intervention/MANDT, Suicide Intervention (ASIST) is an asset. Provision of a criminal record check with vulnerable sector search is required. A positive criminal record check will not necessarily preclude a candidate from being hired - decisions will be made on an individual basis and all information will be kept confidential. Access to reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license (non-GDL) is required. Provision of a Driver’s abstract and proof of $2 million liability insurance required. Ability to carry a backpack (up to 25lbs) and travel on foot year-round is required.

The starting wage range for this position is $45-$52/hour.
