Recovery Peer Support Worker
About the role
Are you passionate about supporting individuals in building and sustaining long-term recovery? Can you collaborate with Recovery Advocates to help participants strengthen their recovery capital, access community resources, and successfully transition to stable housing? The Mustard Seed is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Recovery Peer Support Worker to join our recovery-oriented housing program.
This role provides one-on-one coaching and recovery support to encourage hope and offer practical guidance. You will offer peer-led support groups for mutual empowerment, help connect clients with community resources, and contribute to a strong culture of recovery in our sober recovery-oriented housing program. As a Recovery Peer Support Worker, you will work closely with a Recovery Advocate to assist participants to achieve stability coming into the program, grow their recovery capital, and support participant’s transition into appropriate housing.
Employment Type: Fixed Term July to March 2027 Schedule: Sunday to Monday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and Tuesday 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Reporting to: Recovery Supervisor City: Calgary Number of Positions to Fill: 1 RFR #: 2097
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Connect with clients on an ongoing basis to assist in their recovery;
- Build rapport with clients to coach and support the achievement of goals identified in their goal plans;
- Assist clients in building daily living skills through continuous support;
- Connect clients with recovery supports and external resources;
- Collaborate with internal Mustard Seed services to ensure clients receive comprehensive wraparound supports;
- Facilitate recovery-oriented events and groups, engaging intentionally with clients to build rapport and foster a sense of community;
- Advocate on behalf of clients to ensure their needs and concerns are addressed;
- Document client interactions, referrals, progress, and any changes in behavior, completing incident reports;
- Bring forward identified client risks or issues to the supervisor and colleagues to develop action plans;
- Assist advocates, housing support workers, and the recovery supervisor as needed;
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Diploma or an undergraduate degree in related field;
- Peer Support training and/or Wellbriety certification is considered an asset;
- Lived experience related to addictions and/or homelessness is considered an asset;
- Demonstrated experience in de-escalation, crisis intervention, and conflict resolution;
- Experience providing support to individuals experiencing addictions, mental health challenges, and/or homelessness;
- Ability to maintain composure, professionalism, and sound judgment in challenging or crisis situations;
- Demonstrated commitment to providing compassionate, empathetic, and non-judgmental support;
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment;
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to complete accurate documentation;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook) and other relevant computer applications;
- A thorough understanding of the Protection of Persons in Care Act;
- Possession of a valid Class 5 driver’s License, and a clean driving abstract.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Time more than regular working hours may be required on occasion.
- Local travel to various Mustard Seed sites and external agencies will be required.
- The working environment for this position requires moderate amounts of walking, standing, sitting, and daily interactions with colleagues and guests.
- Fast paced and demanding work environment.
- Moderate to extreme mental effort required to respond to highly intense situations.
- Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience
difficulties or impairment at times, which could result in them uttering
threats, discriminatory statements, and other insults at your person. This
may in a raised voice, or in seeing unpredictable behaviour up to and
including the possibility of them becoming aggressive
- Training on how to respond is provided, but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- An Employment Background Check is required for all positions at The Mustard Seed.
- As The Mustard Seed is a Christian ministry, we require our employees to agree to respect and not detract from The Mustard Seed’s Employment Values during their employment at The Mustard Seed.
- Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
- This position requires the use of a company vehicle. Candidate must have and maintain valid driver’s license and will need to consent to a driver’s abstract request.
