Background:
Auduzhe Mino Nesewinong (Place of Healthy Breathing) is an Indigenous led primary health care initiative that has supported First Nations, Inuit and Métis (FNIM) community members for more than 5 years. Grounded in Indigenous values, self determination, and relationship based care, Auduzhe was established to address systemic barriers experienced by FNIM peoples. Through trusted community partnerships and outreach based service delivery, Auduzhe has grown into an interdisciplinary primary health care model that provides culturally safe, trauma informed, and wholistic care across the continuum, including health promotion, disease prevention, mental health and wellness, and primary care services. Embedded within Na Me Res (Native Men?s Residence), Auduzhe also supports Indigenous men residing at the shelter by delivering culturally safe, trauma informed primary health care and mental wellness services in a familiar and trusted setting. Auduzhe?s approach prioritizes community identified needs, continuity of care, and coordination with Indigenous and allied service providers, while advancing Indigenous ways of knowing and being within primary health care settings.
The Chiropodist position is intended to support the team at Auduzhe Mino Nesewinong in creating a welcoming and culturally safe space for Indigenous clients. The main functions of the chiropodist are to provide direct care to clients to recognize and treat pathologies in the foot area, which diminish the health, mobility, comfort and independence of clients. In addition, the chiropodist will provide health teaching, advocacy and health promotion services for clients, as well as consultation to nurses providing foot care services.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Provides culturally safe care to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis community members in Tkaronto
- Perform assessment, diagnosis, treatment, health education, counselling and other clinical foot care activities according to college standards which may include footwear assessments and wound management
- Designing and implementing a comprehensive and individualized management plan for all patients
- Identifies trends or issues related to the health of client?s feet and uses this information in planning and advocacy work
- Recognizing and referring to appropriate staff those clients with conditions or needs that are beyond the scope of the chiropodist
- Provides information and counselling to individuals and groups through discussion, workshops, provision of written materials, videos, etc.
- Acts as a resource to staff in the health centre and in partner/community organizations on issues related to foot care
- Ensuring appropriate antiseptic techniques, safe procedures and isolation practices are maintained in the clinical and/or surgical setting, and provide a safe environment for patients, practitioners and others in the clinic
- Participate in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of treatment, education, counselling and health promotion programs and services
- Ensure complete, accurate, and timely documentation using electronic medical records
- Works in collaboration with other team members and Indigenous and allied service organizations as required to ensure a smooth transition between care sites and that clients? needs are met
- Performs other related duties as assigned by Auduzhe Mino Nesewinong leadership
- Maintains and develops competence and knowledge of evidence based-strategies through appropriate continuing education
*Qualifications, Skills, and Experience: *
- Registration and in good standing with the College of Chiropodists of Ontario
- Undergraduate degree from a recognized University and a diploma from a recognized school of chiropody
- Evidence of liability protection/malpractice insurance
- Basic Cardiac Life Support certificate
- Three to five years chiropody experience within a community health setting
