About the role
*Job Summary *
The Registered Pharmacy Technician works in the dispensary dedicated to retirement home services and assists with daily and weekly dispensing of multidose strip packs, narcotic cards, and other medications and supplies. The role also will include site visits for audits to retirement homes and liaising with nursing staff and retirement home residents to provide excellent customer service.
Responsibilities
_Client Responsibilities _
- Liaison between all client homes and the pharmacy
- Works with the pharmacist to communicate policies and procedures to client facilities
- Works with the pharmacist to provide training to client?s registered staff on internal and external policies and procedures
- Brings client issues to internal Dominion team to investigate and create solutions
- Participates in Nursing, Retirement and Community conversions:
- Conversions
- Works directly with management and pharmacy staff to create conversion start date
- Scans all the patient profiles and information at the home to laptop
- Contacts previous pharmacy via letter informing them of the conversion
- Contacts doctors and arranges meetings to introduce Dominion as the pharmacy that will provide service to the home
- Trains all client?s staff on Dominion medication procedures prior to conversion date.
- Pre-conversion day: checks all medication orders against the MARS and prepare orders to be delivered for conversion day
- Removes all medications from the home and replaces with Dominion medications and places new MAR books and supplies in the home. Verifies the MARS match.
- On conversion day, be present and support every staff member for every administration throughout the day.
- Works with the pharmacist to conduct compliance audits on a semi-annual basis for all client homes
- Works with the pharmacist to update training presentations and manuals as necessary
Packaging / PacMed Responsibilities
- Maintains MAR binders, frequent filling form, etc.
- Maintains drug record books
- Checks STS trays while production of PacMed is being run
- Checks the following packaging against MAR:
- PacVision validation and correction screen
- Nacotic and PRN Blisters
- Sets up all new packaging patients into the computer
- Processes changes daily as per packaging and PacMed change protocols
- Orders supplies for PacMed
- Provides excellent customer service while resolving customer billing inquiries (in person and over the phone)
- Manages group home supplies i.e. MARs
- Updates eMARs with all new and changed orders
- Coordinates quarterly and annual medication review with all compliance package patients to ensure compliance with OCP standards
_General Dispensary Responsibilities _
- Performs complex/complicated non-sterile compounding following proper procedures as outlined
- Performs narcotic count and reconciles every 3-6 months
- Maintains dispensary calendar of events (monthly)
- Ensures staff understand their roles and are provided with the tools required to carry out their job effectively
- Implements policies and procedures for dispensary staff
- Acts within full scope of Registered Pharmacy Technician role:
- Checks refill prescriptions
- Performs technical check on prescriptions
- Takes doctor?s orders for prescriptions over the phone
- Liaises with McKesson IT department to resolve and troubleshoot IT related issues in the dispensary
- Complies with company?s Confidentiality Agreement
- Maintains allocated section of the dispensary:
- Dusting
- Checking for expired medications
- Maintains an orderly work environment_Teamwork _
- Acts as a back-up for Pharmacy Assistant Role 1 when necessary and if time permits
- Acts as a back-up for Pharmacy Assistant Role 3 when necessary and if time permits
- Assists with answering telephone calls
- Oversees Pharmacy Assistant/Technician students
- Ensures a positive and productive workflow in the dispensary
- Performs all other responsibilities required by management.
