As a member of the healthcare team, the HCA supports patient care through equipment and supply management, maintenance of a clean, safe environment and the portering of charts, equipment, specimens, etc. The HCA provides unit support to patients, families and those providing service and/or care.

1. Personal Support Worker or Healthcare Aide Certificate or nursing student with successful completion of all level 2 courses at McMaster University or nursing student with successful completion of all level 2 courses in McMaster University and Mohawk College collaborative program or nursing student with successful completion of all level 1 courses in the Mohawk College Diploma program
2. Completed CSAO Techniques course
3. Grade 10 or equivalent
4. Experience maintaining and stocking materials and supplies
5. Demonstrated ability to work closely with staff including the ability to accept assignments, delegation, requests and follow instructions
6. Able to communicate effectively with patients, families and other members of the healthcare team, both verbally and written
7. Able to read and write English proficiently
8. Computer familiarity or willingness to learn computer skills as required
9. Able to use domestic and commercial cleaning equipment and to work with cleaning agents and germicides
10. Able to set and adjust priorities and organize work in response to unit needs
11. Able to demonstrate attributes that contribute to a respectful caring environment
12. In good physical condition. Able to stand for long periods, repetitive reaching, repetitive bending, pushing and lifting using proper body mechanics
