About the role

Position Summary

As a member of the interprofessional team, the Registered Nurse (RN) within the Float Team provides patient-centered nursing care across multiple inpatient and clinical areas based on operational needs. The RN supports the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for assigned patients. Practicing in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario standards, Hospital policies, and Patient Care Services guidelines, the RN delivers safe, compassionate, and evidence-informed care while contributing to patient safety, continuity of care, and collaborative practice and effective patient flow across varying clinical environments. The RN demonstrates clinical leadership, critical thinking, and accountability while contributing to patient safety, continuity of care, quality improvement, and collaborative practice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Meets the College of Nurses of Ontario Standards of Nursing Practice for Registered Nurses and practices in accordance with Hospital and Patient Care Services policies and procedures.
  • Provides nursing care within assigned units, adapting to different clinical environments and team structures as required.
  • Assesses patient needs and develops, implements, and evaluates individualized plans of nursing care for each assigned patient.
  • Applies evidence-based practice and clinical judgment to coordinate patient care activities and identify appropriate resources and supports. Conducts comprehensive nursing assessments and utilizes critical thinking to assess changes in patient status (complexity, stability), initiating consultation, escalation, or transfer of care as required. .
  • Provides direct nursing care including medication administration, wound management, pre- and post-operative care, patient monitoring, and coordination of care. Collaborates with the interprofessional team to coordinate care, support safe transitions, and promote positive patient outcomes.
  • Monitors patient care, workflow processes, and outcomes and participates in quality improvement initiatives to optimize care delivery.
  • Utilizes human and material resources effectively and responsibly.
  • Assumes responsibility for patient safety and contributes to a culture of safety.
  • Functions in accordance with established hospital emergency procedures.
  • Provides leadership and support to team members and performs the Charge Nurse role when assigned.
  • Participates in the orientation, mentorship and support of new team members and nursing students, including preceptorship activities as assigned.
  • Collaborates with external education partners to support student learning experiences.
  • Maintains professional competence through ongoing learning, participation in education sessions and in-services, and self-assessment of professional development needs.
  • Maintains awareness of current developments in nursing practice and relevant legislation, including the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).
  • Supports patient and family education, health promotion, and referrals to appropriate community resources.
  • Participates as a member of the interprofessional team, promoting effective communication and collaboration with patients, families, physicians, healthcare team members, and community agencies.
  • Assists in maintaining established standards of care through individual performance, participation in hospital committees, and engagement in performance improvement and patient flow initiatives.
  • Promotes effective communication and collaboration within and across departments.
  • May be utilized in other patient care areas during a shift based on patient care needs and operational requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the direct Manager or designate.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • Registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses (CNO) as a Registered Nurse.
  • Completion of an approved nursing program BScN or equivalent is required.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) is required. CPR Level HCP (Health Care Provider) will be accepted as an equivalent.
  • Completion of Coronary Care I certificate is required or willingness to obtain within six (6) months of hire. Completion of QRS OnDemand Rhythm Interpretation course may be considered as an alternative.
  • IV certification or the ability to obtain certification within six (6) months of hire. Experience with IV initiation may be considered.
  • Completion of Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Trauma Nursing (TNCC), and Emergency Care certifications are considered an asset.

Experience:

  • A minimum of two (2) years of recent experience in an acute care setting is required. Recent graduates who have completed consolidation and/or completed student placements may be considered.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of recent experience in a critical care setting is preferred.

  • Must be able to perform all the duties in the position description
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, push/pull without restriction
  • Ability to work as a productive team member is required
  • Demonstrated ability to organize patient care activities, remain flexible and able to adapt to change
  • The successful candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills as evidenced by recent performance appraisals
  • Demonstrated excellence attendance record
