This position is open to all qualified CUPE staff throughout Lakeridge Health commencing 26 May 2026 and closing at 11:59 pm on 29 May 2026.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Outpatient Coding Specialist is responsible for accurately coding and electronically abstracting administrative and clinical information from outpatient records in accordance with national and provincial coding standards, CIHI abstracting requirements, and organizational policies and procedures.
The Coding Specialist participates in departmental and corporate continuous quality improvement initiatives and promotes data quality through ongoing coding reviews, audits, and adherence to established coding standards.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively within the Health Information Management team while demonstrating the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities and strict deadlines.

This position is based out of the corporate office, with the opportunity to work remotely following successful completion of orientation and training requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

" Graduate of an accredited Health Information Management program;

" CHIM certification with active membership in the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) required;

" Minimum one (1) year recent experience coding Emergency Department visits required;

" Two (2) to five (5) years recent experience coding NACRS records, including Emergency, Day Surgery, and/or Oncology, considered an asset;

" Knowledge of additional coding disciplines considered an asset;

" Demonstrated knowledge of ICD-10-CA/CCI classification systems and coding methodologies (coding test required);

" Demonstrated knowledge of current CIHI NACRS abstracting requirements and Canadian Coding Standards;

" Knowledge of Quality Based Procedures (QBPs), Comprehensive Ambulatory Classification System (CACS), and related methodologies;

" Experience with Epic, 3M abstracting systems, Codefinder, and Computer-Assisted Coding considered an asset;

" Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications;

" Demonstrated ability to meet departmental coding and abstracting productivity and quality standards;

" Demonstrated effective keyboarding and computer skills;

" Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize workload and meet deadlines in a high-volume environment;

" Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment;

" Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills with a commitment to supporting a collaborative team approach;

" Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to comprehensive safety programs and practices, including staff, patient, and environmental safety, and participation in ongoing safety education
