What We Do
Since 1973, The Alex has been a community-based, not-for-profit organization providing integrated primary health care, community support services, and housing-focused programs to individuals and families who experience barriers to accessing traditional health, housing, and social service systems. Services are grounded in principles of health equity, low-barrier access, trauma-informed practice, cultural safety, harm reduction, and person-centered care.
Reporting to the Manager of Human Resources, the HR Advisor serves as a trusted partner across several core functions, providing expert guidance to both leaders and frontline team members. This role is responsible for administering human resources policies and procedures, while supporting organizational goals and compliance. Key areas of responsibility include employee relations, performance and leave management, organizational development, and employee engagement initiatives.
This is a contract, full-time position from August 31, 2026 to September 30, 2027.
What You Will Do
- Build solid relationships and act as a trusted partner to people leaders and employees.
- Partner with people leaders to foster strong culture and team engagement.
- Support people leaders with employee relations matters including conflict resolution, performance management, and disciplinary actions, and provide recommendations for resolution.
- Support managers through the full termination process, ensuring compliance, clear communication, and consistent organizational practices.
- Lead internal workplace investigations.
- Manage and monitor leave of absences (family, medical, long-term disability, and discretionary), ensuring accurate documentation and consistent coordination with employees and managers.
- Manage work-related injuries and Worker Compensation Board (WCB) claims.
- Coordinate and oversee return-to-work plans and work accommodation processes.
- Support the implementation and provide ongoing administration of performance evaluation processes.
- Plan, coordinate, and deliver engaging leadership training sessions for people leaders across the organization.
- Support the annual rollout and communication of HR policy and procedure updates across the organization.
- Actively participate in the creation and introduction of P & C related projects.
- Proactively recommend initiatives to enhance the employee experience.
- Stay current with industry trends and best practices in HR.
- Nurture a positive working environment.
- Collaborate with other HR team members on cross-functional projects and organizational priorities.
- Participate in and support the overall strategic direction of the Human Resources department.
- Participate in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills.
- Serve as the HR representative on one of The Alex’s staff committees.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or equivalent.
- Minimum of two years of progressive experience in a Human Resource or related position.
- Active member in good standing with CPHR Alberta, or working toward professional membership.
- Demonstrated relationship management skills along with leading, planning and executing strategic HR initiatives.
- Demonstrated ability to lead workplace investigations.
- Proficiency using Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
- Experience using ADP Workforce Now or a similar Human Resources Information System (HRIS).
- Experience delivering training to leadership audiences in both virtual and classroom environments is preferred.
- Knowledge of human resource administration best-practices.
- Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
- Capacity to empathize with team members’ experiences.
- Demonstrated understanding of diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
- Ability to interpret legislation (Alberta Employment Standards and Alberta Human Rights Act) and provide relevant advice.
- Proven track record of delivering results by demonstrating an ability to take independent action.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Ability to adapt to changing demands, solve problems effectively, and remain composed under pressure.
- Exceptional communication, customer service, and relationship-building skills to support collaboration across teams and with external stakeholders.
- A satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record clearance is required.
- Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action.
Work Environment & Schedule
- Full-time contract from August 31, 2026, to September 30, 2027
- Standard Hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
- Works from The Alex Community Health Centre: 2840 – 2 Avenue SE, Calgary, AB
- This position is primarily office-based and offers the opportunity to work within a collaborative and supportive team environment, along with the flexibility to work remotely one day per week.
- Regular interaction with internal stakeholders and occasional communication with external partners.
- Predominantly sedentary work involving extended periods of computer and desk-based activities.
- Occasional standing, walking, and light lifting (up to 10–15 lbs.).
- Standard office environment with minimal environmental risks and occasional travel between work locations.
