Our MedtechInsurance division is developing clinically and actuarially informed technologies for risk assessment and insurance underwriting. We work at the intersection of medicine, insurance, software engineering and artificial intelligence, in collaboration with experienced physicians, academic researchers, industry partners and Mila. We are seeking a hands-on Chief Technology Officer to take full ownership of our technology strategy, architecture, cybersecurity and engineering delivery. This is not a purely advisory or people-management position. The successful candidate must be comfortable moving between executive strategy, system architecture, code and infrastructure reviews, production troubleshooting, partner discussions and team leadership. What you will own Lead the technical strategy and engineering roadmap across MedtechInsurance and MedTechnologies’ regulated SaaS platforms. Review, strengthen and evolve our existing AWS architecture, including React-based applications, Django and Django REST APIs, Python services, MySQL/RDS, Celery/Redis, ECS, S3 and CloudFront. Remain technically hands-on through architecture design, code review, infrastructure decisions, debugging and resolution of complex production issues. Establish scalable engineering practices, including infrastructure as code, automated testing, CI/CD, release management, technical documentation and development standards. Own cloud security, privacy engineering and operational resilience, including IAM, encryption, key and secret management, audit logging, monitoring, incident response, backup and disaster recovery. Ensure secure separation and governance of personal, medical, insurance and analytical data in multi-tenant environments. Lead integrations with enterprise, insurer, laboratory and healthcare systems, potentially including ServiceNow, Epic, FHIR, HL7 and other APIs. Work with Mila, data scientists, clinicians and actuarial experts to establish appropriate AI and machine-learning infrastructure, MLOps, validation, explainability and model-governance practices. Recruit, manage and mentor internal engineers and specialized external development partners. Translate clinical, actuarial, product and commercial requirements into realistic technical priorities, budgets and delivery plans. Support technology due diligence, enterprise sales, regulatory discussions, strategic partnerships, investors and the board. What success will look like During the first year, the CTO will be expected to: Complete a comprehensive architecture, cybersecurity, code-quality and cloud-cost assessment. Deliver a prioritized technical roadmap with measurable security, scalability and reliability objectives. Implement consistent infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD, observability and incident-management practices. Improve platform resilience, documentation, testing and development velocity. Advance priority enterprise integrations and the AI/data platform. Build an accountable, high-performing engineering structure capable of supporting commercialization and growth. Required experience Approximately 10 or more years of progressive software-engineering experience, including at least five years in software architecture, engineering leadership or comparable technical ownership. Demonstrated responsibility for designing, deploying, securing and scaling production SaaS applications on AWS. Strong practical knowledge of AWS services such as ECS, RDS, S3, CloudFront, IAM, KMS, Secrets Manager, CloudWatch, networking and related security controls. Hands-on proficiency with Python and API-based backend development, ideally including Django and Django REST Framework. Strong understanding of modern front-end architecture, ideally including React and TypeScript. Experience with relational databases, data modelling, APIs, background processing and distributed application design. Experience with Docker, CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code technologies such as Terraform, AWS CDK or CloudFormation. Demonstrated ownership of cybersecurity, privacy, availability and disaster-recovery requirements for sensitive or regulated data. Ability to evaluate technical trade-offs and communicate them clearly to clinical, commercial and executive stakeholders. Experience hiring, mentoring and managing engineers and external development resources. Willingness and ability to remain hands-on as the organization grows. We value demonstrated capability and relevant accomplishments. A computer-science or engineering degree is welcome but is not required where equivalent experience can be demonstrated. Strong assets Healthcare, insurance, InsurTech, FinTech or regulated software experience. Health-data interoperability experience, including FHIR, HL7 or Epic. ServiceNow application or integration experience. Applied AI or machine-learning experience, including MLOps, model monitoring, explainability, reproducibility or governance. Experience supporting medical-device software, privacy certifications, SOC 2, ISO 27001 or comparable compliance programs. Experience scaling a technology company from early commercialization through enterprise deployment. Professional proficiency in both French and English. Professional English is required because the CTO will regularly work with English-speaking clients, partners, vendors and technical resources outside Quebec. French proficiency is a strong asset. Location and work authorization Candidates must reside in Quebec or Ontario and be legally authorized to work in Canada. Occasional travel to Montreal, Toronto and partner meetings may be required. Our commitment to inclusion MedTechnologies/MedtechInsurance is committed to building an inclusive and representative team. We strongly encourage applications from women, Indigenous peoples, racialized persons, persons with disabilities, LGBTQ2S+ people and others historically underrepresented in technology and executive leadership. All candidates will be assessed according to the qualifications and requirements of the position. Accommodations are available throughout the recruitment process upon request.
