Additional Information Within the portfolio of Inclusive Education, Educational Audiologists play a critical role in ensuring equitable access to learning for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH). Key responsibilities include direct-to-student support, capacity building for teaching and support staff, servicing and troubleshooting of hearing assistive technologies, and collaboration with students, families, school staff and community audiologists. The successful applicant will demonstrate the following strengths and skills:
Flexibility and adaptability | The range of students supported by Educational Audiologists is reflective of the full spectrum of student profiles within the Calgary Board of Education. Supports may be required for students k-12, including high academic achievers, students with learning disabilities, students who have experienced trauma or who have emotional or behavioural concerns, students with developmental complexities, as well as students new to Canada or new to formalized schooling altogether. Working within a multidisciplinary team to ensure appropriate targeted supports are in place is key to success in this role.
Collaboration and communication | As part of a multidisciplinary team, Braille Assistants must be skilled in navigating dynamic relationships between students, families, classroom teachers, DHH strategists, and others involved in designing student programming and monitoring their progress.
Attention to detail | Navigating a large caseload with multiple layers of intersecting service providers can be challenging. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong organizational and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work with a high level of independence in prioritizing and coordinating student supports and services.
Purpose Under the direction and supervision of System Principal, Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) and as a member of the student’s support team, the Educational Audiologist primarily works directly in supporting students who are coded 45 and 55 and have significant difficulties in accessing their educational environment.
Accountability
This position is accountable for: Assisting in the identification, diagnosis and remediation of students’ hearing loss; Maintaining professional relationships with colleagues and parents of DHH children; and Maintaining a positive working environment which requires open communication with private audiology clinics, CHR, Hearing Strategists and distributors of assistive listening equipment.
Responsibilities Coordinates test results with other diagnostic data such as educational, medical, social, and behavioural information. Serves as part of the School, Area or System Resource Team, and assists in determining appropriate placement or programming for the child. Provides information and assistance to support the program. Increases awareness of hearing impairments and aural habilitation through a balanced program of in-service training, courses, information sharing at staff meetings, general presentations, discussions and provision of printed materials, etc. Serves as a resource to teachers and other staff on hearing loss, associated issues and expectations. Maintains and/or coordinates maintenance of auditory equipment such as auditory trainers and equipment designed for auditory diagnoses. Maintains inventory of equipment. Conducts routine check and repair of equipment and forwards to service agencies as required. Provides consultation and training on equipment needs and use to parents, teachers and students. Evaluates and selects personal FMs. Determines appropriate equipment for DHH students. Provides input and cost estimates for the preparation of budgets as required and assists in the administration of approved budgets. Maintains a current awareness of developments and trends in the field of audiology to ensure that the CBE keeps abreast of current equipment and practices. Conducts research into related topics as required. Maintains contact with supportive services and agencies available within the community and the school board and makes referrals as necessary. Coordinates interagency involvement as required. Provides a consultative service to other areas and personnel within the Calgary Board of Education as required. Conducts measures of acoustic environment as requested. Writes reports as necessary. Keeps records of student progress and condition of their hearing as well as equipment being used. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications Education and Experience University training in the area of audiology equivalent to a Master’s or Doctor of Audiology degree Must be registered with Alberta College of Speech Language-Pathologists and Audiologists (ACSLPA) and remain active Must have three years of related experience including pediatric audiology experience (diagnostics and rehabilitation) and experience with FM systems Must be knowledgeable of the new technology available with various distributors such as Phonic EAR and Phonak Demonstrated Skills and Competencies Must be able to read and interpret Audiology reports, hearing aid/FM system specifications and operating instructions Capable of functioning with minimal supervision Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with DHH students, staff and parents Knowledge of American Sign Language is an asset Personal suitability.
