Description:

The Health Care Aide (HCA) is a regulated health professional who provides direct personal care and health support services to clients across the lifespan, in accordance with their scope of practice, regulatory standards, and government legislation. Functional supervision is provided by a member of the nursing team and may occur directly or indirectly in accordance with client needs, care context, and regulatory standards. Working collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team the HCA provides care in alignment with documented care plans and assigned or delegated tasks, delivering assistance with activities of daily living, monitoring and reporting changes in health status, and supporting the physical, emotional, psychosocial and behavioural well being of clients. HCAs attend to clients¿ comfort, engagement, and safety by recognizing changes in behaviour, responsiveness, participation, or signs of distress, and by promptly sharing observations with the appropriate team member. They play a vital role in promoting comfort, dignity, and continuity of care, and demonstrate flexibility in responding to the needs of clients and the care team. HCAs actively engage in continuous improvement through feedback, self-reflection, and learning opportunities. The role requires initiative, openness to growth, and a strong commitment to professionalism, responsibility, and accountability. This includes intentionally living Covenant¿s values in day-to-day practice and reflecting them in decision-making, client interactions, teamwork, and the overall approach to care.

Required Qualifications:

Must be registered with and hold a valid practice permit from College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA) prior to commencing employment.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum 6 months of recent experience in palliative care, hospice, or a related healthcare setting. Basic understanding of palliative care principles, including symptom management and end-of-life support. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships with patients and their families. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to work collaboratively within a healthcare team. Ability to demonstrate empathy, patience, and professionalism in all interactions.

Preferred Qualifications:

Additional training or certification in Palliative Care or Geriatric Care (e.g., Certified Palliative Health Care Aide). Experience with electronic health record (EHR) systems, such as Connect Care. Knowledge of Alberta’s best practices and regulations related to palliative care. Skills in providing emotional and spiritual support and managing complex patient needs.
