Job Description:  The Public Health Nurse (PHN), as an integral member of the Health Network team, provides nursing services within the framework of the Population Health Promotion Model and Primary Health Care. The Public Health Nurse translates knowledge from the health and social sciences to support health-enhancing behaviors of individuals, families and population groups through targeted interventions, programs, and advocacy.  Inherent in this role are knowledge, skills, and abilities specific to health promotion, prevention, and protection. This employee works relatively independently and is expected to make decisions based on sound assessments in accordance with The Public Health Act, the nursing policies and procedures of the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA), the SRNA Standards of Practice, the Canadian Community Health Nursing Standards of Practice, SHA Registered Nurse Specialty Protocols (RNSPs), and other relevant legislation.  This employee leases with, and refers to, other health personnel, and other sectors and community groups.  The Public Health Nurse works within established guidelines to plan, organize, implement and evaluate nursing programs and services.

Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)

Experience

  • Minimum of one (1) year Public Health Nursing experience is an asset.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • High level of accuracy in immunization, and handling specialized equipment. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Knowledge in health promotion and prevention strategies
  • Knowledge of principles & practices relating to public health laws & regulations
  • Uses critical analysis, reflective practice and assessment.  
  • Knowledge in program and community development process
  • Identifies the importance of culture on health.
  • Knowledge of best practices in harm reduction strategies
  • Ability to demonstrate appropriate level of professional conduct and judgement.
  • Demonstrates flexibility by adjusting workload to accommodate client needs.
  • Uses independent judgment based on Public Health principles.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of multiple health promotion strategies
  • Ability to utilize evidence-based practice
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members and the community at large.
  • Advocacy, negotiation, crisis management and conflict resolution
  • High level of accuracy in health assessment, nursing diagnosis and treatment.
  • Application of social determinants of health for program development & delivery
  • Ability to analyze health issues in the context of political & social climate
  • Evaluates nursing interventions in individual, group and community outcomes.  
  • Demonstrated knowledge in media communication and social marketing.
  • Knowledge in population health promotion approaches and community development
  • Knowledge in various pregnancy related issues
  • Applies understanding of child development.
  • Demonstrates application of the nursing process
  • Ability to exercise independent decision making in a community-based environment
  • Ability to be self directed and work relatively independently
  • Willingness to adhere to established Public Health policies and procedures.
