Nurse Clinician, Nursing Ambulatory Clinic

Job Summary In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. Provides and coordinates nursing practice activities such as patient assessment, patient and family teaching and health promotion activities in a defined clinical area, consistent with established policies, standards of practice and philosophy at British Columbia’s Children’s Hospital. Duties/Accountabilities Initiates and coordinates assessment and post assessment referrals; responds to patient, family and health care member enquiries and liaises with other support diagnostic/health services in coordinating patient referrals. Collaborates with nursing staff, medical staff, health care disciplines and community agencies/services to plan patient care in the clinic and community setting. Consults with nursing staff, nursing instructors and students to plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for patients and families. Promotes and implements teaching for patients and families about illness prevention, maintenance and health promotion. Participates in the orientation and continuing education of nursing staff and students by role modeling and preceptoring. Consults with educational resources such as in-house/external agencies in developing and implementing continuing education and professional nursing practice development for BCCH nursing staff. Acts as a clinical nursing resource person for patients, families, nursing staff, health care professionals and community agencies/services. In consultation with other team members, plans and develops educational resources such as pamphlets and patient teaching videos for patient and family health education. Participates as a member of the health care team in facilitating patient care reviews and conferences. Provides input to the Patient Services Director, or delegate, regarding policies, procedures and operational requirements by observing service needs and providing spoken or written suggestions which address patient and family needs and promote effective use of resources. Consults with the multi-disciplinary team in identifying and implementing appropriate resolutions to ethical issues/concerns relating to patients and families. Promotes the implementation and evaluation of nursing research and quality improvement activities as directed by participating in committee work and by keeping current through attendance at education and in-service opportunities. Performs other professional related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education, Training and Experience Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP). Three (3) years’ recent related clinical nursing experience which includes ambulatory care or community health service experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Skills And Abilities Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to relate effectively to children and their families. Ability to make decisions in an independent manner in a clinical setting. Ability to function as an active member of a multi-disciplinary team and function as a nursing resource. Physical ability to perform the duties of the job. Ability to operate related equipment (e.g. personal computer).

Coordinates nursing practice activities including patient assessment, family teaching, and health promotion within an ambulatory clinic. Collaborates with multi-disciplinary teams to plan patient care and serves as a clinical resource for staff and families.

Requires graduation from an approved School of Nursing and current RN registration with the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals. Candidates must have at least three years of recent clinical nursing experience, specifically in ambulatory care or community health.
