ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Vice-President of Medical Affairs and Innovation, you are a medical advisor for Héma-Québec staff, in particular relating to infections transmitted by transfusion, donor selection criteria, donor discomfort and transfusion reactions.

Specifically, you:

  • Will act as a consultant to all of the organization's managers and staff for questions requiring medical expertise relating to your skills; 
  • Monitor, along with the biohazard management specialist, blood supply safety risks, as well as risks for blood donors, and perform appropriate risk analyses and recommend risk reduction measures if necessary, particularly regarding blood-borne infections; 
  • Supervise, along with the Director of Nursing Services, the work of the Assistant Director of Nursing Services regarding donor eligibility, the autologous and directed donations program, monitoring apheresis donors and transfusion reactions, in compliance with CSA standards and Heath Canada regulations; 
  • Ensure the course of action for follow-up to provide to donors infected by a blood-borne virus, including mandatory reporting to the appropriate authorities; 
  • Oversee the development and completion of studies, relevant clinical or technical projects, in consultation and agreement with the Vice-President of Medical Affairs and Innovation;
  • Determine the indication of product recalls in certain cases;
  • Play a medical advisory role for various sectors of the organization; 
  • Ensure that the activities of your service are carried out in compliance with the procedures and directives, as well as the Good Manufacturing Practices set out by Health Canada; 
  • Respond to corrective measures conveyed to you by Regulatory Affairs;
  • Promote ongoing professional training to fill gaps and meet specific and evolving needs;
  • Represent Héma-Québec at the Haemovigilance Committee; 
  • Take part in clinics, meetings, committees, conferences, symposia and conventions related to Héma-Québec's activities; 
  • Act as a resource person in Héma-Québec's biosafety program; 
  • Perform any other tasks required by the Vice-President of Medical Affairs and Innovation.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Doctorate in medicine, as well as training in medical microbiology and/or experience in medical microbiology and infectious diseases, or a diploma in community health with experience in infectious diseases; 
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience with interest or experience in transfusion medicine; 
  • Strong people and team management skills, as well as strong listening and coaching skills; 
  • Fluent in English and French, both oral and written; 
  • Thorough knowledge of good clinical practice;
  • Proficient in the main tools and software (Microsoft Office); 
  • Available to travel within Québec and occasionally outside of Québec and Canada; 
  • For staffing purposes, any combination of education and experience deemed to be relevant will be considered.
