Job title: Laboratory Specialist

Type of position: Regular

Work location: Toronto

BBA is seeking a Laboratory Specialist to operate testwork at BBA’s Metallurgical Laboratory in Hamilton, Ontario.

Our ideal candidate has 2 to 7 years’ work experience as a Laboratory Specialist or Lab Technologist or Lab Technician in the Canadian mining sector and post-secondary education (Bachelor of Science or Engineering Technology Diploma). Applicants with metallurgical mineral processing experience including progressive experience in an analytical laboratory will have hiring priority.

Responsibilities include:

  • Fully dedicated operation of the BBA Metallurgical Laboratory
  • Perform sample, reagent and calibration preparation as directed
  • Calibrate, operate, maintain, troubleshoot and conduct routine maintenance on all assigned instruments
  • Conduct testwork
  • Compile, verify and validate accurate data records
  • Meet quality assurance and turnaround specifications
  • Follow all Quality Control and Standard Operating Procedures
  • Process test data in excel, reviewing data for completeness and accuracy, adjusting and customizing formulas and graphs as needed
  • Identify test errors or equipment operational issues and liaise with team members to implement corrective measures
  • Report results by summarizing findings in MS Word
  • Obtain quotations on consumables and equipment
  • Complete program administration documents based on templates with direction including proposal drafts, procedure updates, presentations, requisitions
  • Maintain sample inventory and test result database in Excel
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Technical Diploma or degree in engineering or science related field
  • 2 to 6 years industry experience
  • Strong Asset : 1-3+ years laboratory experience
  • Able to operate, troubleshoot and maintain analytical instruments
  • Intermediate Computer Skills (excel, word, outlook)
  • In possession of a valid driver’s license
  • Can lift heavy objects
  • Experience using manual tools (wrench, screwdrivers, etc.)
  • Strong Asset : Can read P&ID’s
  • Available periodically for extended hours
