KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Work within external partner sites, including hospitals, community care, and rehabilitation settings, to develop and deliver physical therapy services while providing clinical supervision to MScPT students on clinical placements.
• Provide guidance and direction to students regarding patient/client assessments, interventions, consultation and documentation standards that meet the standards of the CPO.
• Advise the Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education of student progress and assessment of skills, to ensure that students meet competency requirements.
• In a group supervision model, monitor and assess student performance and competency, requiring intensive concentration and the ability to evaluate multiple students simultaneously.
• Provide ongoing, objective feedback to placement students within a group supervision model, including delivery of assessments that may be negative or impact their progression in the program.
• Provide guidance and direction to students to facilitate the translation of theory to practice.
• Assess student learning needs and determine appropriate patient/client assignments to achieve learning goals.
• Take responsibility under professional registration for student actions, and review and authorize all student documentation.
• Assess unique patient care needs and develop appropriate treatment plans.
• Build relationships and liaise with existing partner organizations and potential new partners to develop new opportunities for service delivery and maximize clinical student placement opportunities.
• Identifies opportunities to support faculty research on topics that align with the clinical services being delivered and lead activities to support research at partner locations.
• Actively pursue ongoing education and training in the field and stay current with knowledge, trends and practices that are necessary to provide appropriate scope in assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and other applicable areas within the scope of professional practice.
• Operate and manage the delivery of PT services in collaboration with the partner facility by monitoring all aspects (referral flow, scheduling, identification of supply needs, etc.). Independently address issues with partner organizations to resolve complex or unexpected patient care issues and ensure positive outcomes in provision of care.
• Undertake professional initiative to address complex and diverse patient care needs that may span physical, mental and psychosocial health. Identify and address priority issues with limited resources.
• Assist course coordinators with activities in preparation for clinical placements, including preparing tutorials, lab demonstrations, written or audio visual materials, and course material development.
• Use professional judgement and expertise to adapt instruction and guidance based on the clinical environment and patient/client population.
• Foster a diverse, equitable and inclusive work and clinical placement environment, where all individuals are supported to reach their full potential.
• Assist with curriculum development, lead group discussions and grade exams and assignments, as required.
• Other duties in support of the School of Rehabilitation Therapy, as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master’s degree in Physical Therapy.
• Registered to practice in the province of Ontario and in good standing with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in Physical Therapy clinical practice with broad professional experience in a variety of settings.
• Minimum 3 years’ experience as a clinical preceptor for entry-level physical therapy students, with knowledge of the College regulations regarding student supervision. Preference will be given to individuals who have experience supervising all levels of students (i.e., junior, intermediate, senior).
• Demonstrated expertise at least one of the following areas: primary care, acute care, inpatient care, outpatient rehabilitation. Preference will be given to individuals with practice experience in multiple settings.
• Expert knowledge of practice standards of the College of Physiotherapy of Ontario, with the ability to assess student competency against College standards, and knowledge of physical therapy documentation standards and management of private health information.
• Preference will be given to candidates whose experience and goals align with the strategic mission of the School, particularly with respect to building our capacity for community rehabilitation and/or collaborative care, and building academic excellence in our curricula.
• A valid class ‘G’ driver’s license required.
• Current first aid certification.
• Current CPR certification.

SPECIAL SKILLS:
• Demonstrated excellence in communication, interpersonal relationships, supervision of students, and participatory leadership. Proven ability to elicit and foster trust, develop positive working relationships and work effectively with students, patients and colleagues.
• Ability to interact professionally and effectively with people across multiple areas within and outside the University (students, staff, senior administration, faculty and community members).
• Demonstrated service orientation and capability to deal with a wide variety of constituents. Proven ability to establish and maintain relationships with partners in manner that builds trust and respect.
• Proven ability to operationalize full scope of physical therapy practice. Ability to communicate, develop and evaluate practice innovations. Ability to develop, implement, and document the evaluation of physical therapy services at individual and programmatic levels.
• Demonstrated skill in providing constructive feedback to students and evaluating student competencies. Ability to develop and implement experiential student learning opportunities/activities. Ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and student- centred environment.
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality, exercise discretion, good judgement and solid decision-making.
• Organizational skills and time management abilities are essential.
• Demonstrated ability to apply principles and values of equity, diversity and inclusion.
• Experience with fundraising is considered an asset.

DECISION MAKING:
• Make decisions using professional judgement and expertise and in accordance with the regulatory standards of the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario, related to provision of care to patients and assessment of student competency and practice.
• Independently make decisions in the course of patient care that could have long term consequences to the patient if inappropriate decisions are made or techniques are applied incorrectly.
• Assess student performance and skills and make decisions on student success in the clinical placement. This may impact their ability to progress in the program, successfully complete licensing exams, or graduate.
• Failure to make appropriate assessments in student competency may have long term impacts including failure by the students to comply with CPO standards, which may incur risk to the student or university.
• Apply an ethical decision-making framework for all decisions.
• Select assessments and treatments for recipients of services.
• Determine clients’/patients’ service eligibility and readiness for service discharge.
• Manage service waitlist, and determine triage procedures.
• Determine whether to entrust students to engage in independent performance of services.
• Determine adequacy of student documentation.
• Evaluate the adequacy of student performance.
• Determine students’ ability to continue on clinical placement.
• Allocate clinical workload to students, including decisions regarding scheduling, delegation and training.
• Within the scope of the service, determine and recommend effective policies and procedures for service delivery and student supervision.
• Make recommendations for resources needed for service delivery (e.g., equipment and supplies).
