Your Opportunity:

We’re currently seeking two Combined Laboratory/X-Ray Technologists in the communities of Fort Vermilion and La Crete. Fort Vermilion is a hamlet on the Peace River in northern Alberta. Established in 1788, Fort Vermilion shares the title of oldest European settlement in Alberta with Fort Chipewyan. A number of historical buildings are still standing, ready for visitors to experience a glimpse of life on the edge of the frontier. La Crete is a hamlet in northern Alberta approximately 57 kilometers from High Level. It has a rich cultural heritage and hosts annual hockey and basketball tournaments. These positions may require travel between communities to provide additional coverage as needed.

Northern Allowance: In addition to a competitive rate of pay, AHS currently has a Northern Allowance in place to an annual maximum of $6,300. This allowance is non-pensionable and is payable on an hourly basis for all hours paid at the basic rate of pay. Travel Expense Reimbursement: Permanent and temporary employees working in excess of one (1) year whose work sites are above the 57th parallel are also eligible to receive an annual reimbursement of personal travel expenses to an annual maximum of $1,235. Eligible employees will be reimbursed for the cost of one (1) round trip, per calendar year, to any destination within Alberta. Travel must originate from a community above the 57th parallel to any destination within Alberta and cannot be carried over.

Additional incentives such as temporary housing (up to 3 months) and relocation assistance, based on eligibility and availability. Opportunities for career development/growth, including an additional five days of paid leave for purposes of professional development for Regular employees employed in excess of one year, and pro-rated days for new hires based on number of months employed in a calendar year.

Description:

As a Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technologist I, you will perform procedures in both the laboratory and in diagnostic imaging, typically in rural sites. You will work as a member of the inter-professional team and be responsible for collecting and analyzing biological specimens, conducting X-ray examinations, ECGs and reporting results. Your responsibilities include preparing patients, venipuncture and micropuncture, routine equipment maintenance, maintaining supplies and performing quality control procedures as required.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of diploma from an accredited program in Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technology (CLXT). Active or eligible for registration with the Alberta College of Combined Laboratory and X-ray Technologists (ACCLXT).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Ability to work various shifts including days, evenings, weekends, and take call by responding within 30 minutes. Must demonstrate high level of organizational, communication (written and oral), and interpersonal skills. An ability to work well with patients and all members of the healthcare team. Entering, reviewing, reporting, and distributing patient results in an accurate, complete, timely, and efficient manner. Assessing unusual tests results and proceeding with established procedures for follow up with senior staff, pathologists, and physicians. Operation, calibration, and performance of basic troubleshooting with selected instrumentation and reporting equipment malfunction. Performing all required Quality Control procedures and maintaining accurate and up-to-date records. Investigating and documenting Quality Control problems and following up with Charge Technologist. Receives and reviews imaging requests for complete pertinent clinical and order information. Provides patient, public, and staff radiation protection and follows the principles of As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA). Follows all established safety policies and procedures. Participation in training of new staff and students. Demonstrates interest in professional growth and be prepared to maintain competency of technical skills.
