Manager, Community Mental Health and Wellness

We are seeking a highly dedicated and professional Manager of Community Mental Health and Wellness to join our multi-disciplinary Mental Health team! As the Manager, you will be responsible for the development, coordination, implementation, supervision and evaluation of mental health programs and activities based on the needs of the Fort McKay community and members. As Manager, you will work as a lead therapist in addition to creating and implementing key program components while managing and supporting staff and other contracted therapists. This is a full-time position reporting directly to the Director, Health and based in Fort McKay, AB.


Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Managing & Program Development

  • Supervise staff and coordinate team efforts to provide best care and support to the FMFN community
  • Record and report program statistical data to Director, Health and Senior Services
  • Fiscal responsibility for budget and external funding
  • Conduct performance appraisals on staff and provide clinical supervision and mentoring
  • Develop, organize and facilitate the delivery of addictions and mental health promotion, prevention and programming utilizing best practices and methods
  • Develop proposals for community programming to better enhance existing programs and develop new initiatives
  • Provide links between wellness services and culturally relevant programs and services and address mental health and addiction issues in the community as a whole
  • Keep up to date with latest research, practices and guidelines through professional literature, attending course and seminars, and establishing and maintaining contact with other professionals


  • Complete client screenings and make appropriate referrals to treatment programs
  • Act as an advocate for clients and coordinate required services
  • Provide support to clients and their families in one-on-one and group counselling
  • Support and assist clients with skills and strategies for dealing with mental health and/or addictions
  • Ensure the highest level of confidentiality is always maintained
  • Assess client’s needs, identify problems and work with interdisciplinary teams and treatment centers to devise and implement treatment plans
  • Recognize and respond to potential risks to prevent harm and avoid injury to the client, self and others
  • Recognize and report signs of abuse, and/or neglect
  • Other duties and projects as assigned


  • Masters or equivalent in Social work, Psychology or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of clinical counselling combined with relevant Management experience
  • Good standing with professional regulatory body as appropriate
  • Effective organizational skills with strong interpersonal and communication skills to enable working directly with clients
  • First Aid and Mental Health First Aid
  • Experience working in a First Nations community with Indigenous populations required
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license and willing to drive a company vehicle
  • Must provide a Clean Drivers Abstract
  • Must provide a clear Criminal Record check with Vulnerable Sector
  • Ability to speak Cree or Dene is a definite asset
  • Successful candidate will be required to live in (or relocate to) Fort McMurray, Alberta
